New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Thursday that he would make a $50-million donation to the Sierra Club in an effort to fight coal. The money will go to the Sierra Club鈥檚 program, which aims to shut down coal plants across the United States. 鈥淚f we are going to get serious about reducing our carbon footprint in the United States, we have to get serious about coal,鈥 Bloomberg said in a press release. He also expressed frustration with the pace of legislation to clean up energy production. Bloomberg, a man whose political affiliations are fluid鈥攈e was once a Democrat, then a Republican, and is now an independent鈥攈as initiated environmental programs in New York, through , and has also pushed for public-health programs with private donations and legislation.
