A sharp increase in bear attacks across the western United States this summer has officials from the National Park Service concerned that bear-safety education is not reaching park visitors in bear country. Two men were killed by grizzly bears in Yellowstone this summer, an that typically sees an average of only one injury per year and few fatalities. A 2010 study of bear awareness among visitors to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, where a hunter was injured by a , suggests that a large majority of hikers are not educated about bear-safety precautions, which include carrying bear spray and not running away if a bear approaches.
