A skier was killed Monday by an avalanche in the Aspen backcountry, . The victim鈥檚 name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.
Another skier involved, who was uninjured, reported the avalanche on the west side of Aspen Mountain, below Ruthie鈥檚 Lift, at 3 p.m. Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol located the body an hour later, at about 9,400 feet, the Aspen Times reports.
Since two recent snowstorms, avalanche forecasters at the are calling the Aspen zone鈥檚 danger rating 鈥渃onsiderable,鈥 which is the third highest of five categories.
鈥淭his is probably as active of a cycle as we鈥檝e seen since a year ago,鈥 said Blase Reardon, Aspen zone avalanche forecaster.
