One American is dead and eight people are missing after a fishing boat capsized on Monday in the Sea of Cortez, the body of water between Baja California peninsula and Mexico’s mainland. The body of American Leslie Yee washed ashore, but the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mexican navy for who may still be alive thanks to warm water and air temperatures. After the accident, several people managed to swim to shore and call for help. All but eight of the boat’s 44 passengers have been rescued or accounted for. Seven of the missing are Americans. The 115-foot , opertated by , was hit by a sudden storm and 20-foot waves that flipped the boat. “It was pandemonium,” told the San Jose Mercury. “There was panic. People said the boat was going over. Everyone had three or four minutes to get out.” Relatives of survivors have said that the captain of the vessel was warned of a storm, but the passengers were not notified. Divers plan to search for the wreckage today.
