On Thursday afternoon, four members of the Bucknell University men鈥檚 cross-country team were hit by a vehicle during a group run聽in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, . Three were treated for minor injuries and the fourth for moderate injuries, .
A source close to the athletes told 翱耻迟蝉颈诲别听that聽the team, whose , was running against traffic approximately one mile from campus on the two-lane Smoketown Road. There, according to the police report, a Nissan Ultima聽struck the group. Police did not list a motive or explanation for the incident.
Four runners聽were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Of the聽group, three were discharged that day聽and a fourth the following day, according to聽Kevin Donner, head coach of the Bison, Bucknell鈥檚 cross-country team. Donner told 国产吃瓜黑料聽that all athletes taken to the hospital sustained numerous cuts and bruises.聽The athlete with moderate聽injuries鈥擝enjamin Mueller,聽according to the police report鈥攔emained hospitalized overnight with a broken nose and concussion.
The Bison were聽scheduled to compete at Penn State鈥檚 Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday. In light of the accident, Donner said聽he decided to withdraw both the men鈥檚聽and women鈥檚 teams from the event.聽
鈥淲e didn鈥檛 think the team was in the right mental state,鈥 Donner told 国产吃瓜黑料.聽He said the team had聽missed meals and runs as they visited teammates in the hospital.
鈥淥ur first and foremost concern is for the health and welfare of the student athletes,鈥澛燡on Terry, associate director of athletics and director of athletic communications at Buckness University, told 国产吃瓜黑料.
Donner expects all athletes to make a full recovery. According to the team鈥檚 release, the Bison will compete at the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational on September 26.聽
