London’s reopened on Wednesday after an , some 63 years after it hosted track cycling at the 1948 London Olympic Games. The track, the only finals venue from the 1948 games still in use, had fallen into a state of disrepair before its owners and British Cycling reached a renovation agreement earlier this year. “It is fitting that the year before London 2012, we are able to celebrate the refurbishment of the track at one of the key venues from the 1948 Games,” said Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics. Olympic gold medalist Chris Boardman led a ceremonial first lap, and the first meet on the new track is scheduled for Saturday. Track cycling at the 2012 London Olympics will take place at a seperate velodrome completed this February north of the Olympic Park.
