You may doubt the numbers, but according to neuroscientist and philosopher , you have 60 to 80 thousand thoughts running through your mind every single day. That鈥檚 somewhere between 42 and 56 thoughts a minute. Which means that a half-hour run gives you at least 1,260 opportunities to think about whatever you want to. Talk about mind power.
Sometimes when we run, our thoughts are running-appropriate: 鈥淚f I tuck my hips in like Pre, I can run as fast as Pre.鈥
Sometimes when we run, our thoughts are worth millions: 鈥淲hat if the next special-edition Oreo were s鈥檓ore-flavored? Hell, yes.鈥
Sometimes when we run, our thoughts are freaking existential: 鈥淓xpecting the unexpected is impossible. It can鈥檛 be unexpected if you鈥檙e expecting it.鈥
Having thoughts is one thing, but controlling them is another. 鈥淚t鈥檚 common for thoughts to bounce around,鈥 says , a sports psychologist and mental-training consultant for U.S. Olympic teams and USA Triathlon. 鈥淵ou go from 鈥榃hat am I doing out here?鈥 to 鈥楬ey, I鈥檓 working hard, I鈥檓 reaching my goals, I鈥檓 doing this!鈥欌 Taylor says that the key to keeping your mind on your run is to successfully manage what鈥檚 going on in there. Just as with running, this takes training. 鈥淵ou have to learn to master positive thinking,鈥 Taylor explains. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 where it gets hard. It鈥檚 a skill you have to work at.鈥
When you do master your mind, you also maximize your fitness level. 鈥淵ou may have the physical ability to run a certain pace or distance, but if you aren鈥檛 in the right state of mind, then, mentally, you won鈥檛 be able to do it,鈥 says Taylor.
Once you home in and focus, there鈥檚 a reason why that half-hour jaunt seems to produce cranial gems: It does. that exercise promotes memory function and information processing by speeding cell growth in the hippocampus, the memory and learning center of the brain. A running-induced increased heart rate pumps extra oxygen into your noggin鈥檚 lobes, also producing a drop in stress hormones. All of which means that that legendary, clear-headed runner鈥檚 high is the real thing.聽
