It鈥檚 probably happened to you. Deep into a long training day you start craving a bacon cheeseburger and suddenly that pile of ground meat is all you can think about. Turns out, you鈥檙e not alone. Even the best athletes lust after certain foods听during a race or run. Here are a few of the things athletes crave, plus a biological explanation of why these cravings听happen.听

Cravings Explained

The reason for most cravings is simple: you crave what you need. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a good thing鈥攊t鈥檚 a survivor thing,鈥 says San Francisco Bay Area-based sports nutritionist and ultra-athlete,听. 听鈥淎n听ultrarunner听wanting something salty, they probably need more electrolytes. If they鈥檙e craving sweets, they probably need more calories. Coke probably means they鈥檙e tired.鈥 Jerky, peanut butter, and burgers can signal a protein deficit. 鈥淵ou get those cravings because you鈥檙e breaking down muscle,鈥 she says.听

But cravings are influenced by other factors as well. Flavor fatigue, for instance. Most athletes, like听DiGiulian听and Boone, turn to something salty after half a day or more of eating sweet sports food.听

The feel of the food can also influence cravings. 鈥淪wimmers in long distance races often crave canned peaches,鈥澨鼴lende听says. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e dry from mouth breathing and swimming in the ocean, and it鈥檚 a little like glycerin on your tongue.鈥

And then there鈥檚 the mental aspect to cravings that goes beyond nutritional needs. If you鈥檝e been following a strict diet, or 鈥測ou鈥檙e dreaming about it because you can鈥檛 have it, you鈥檙e going to think, 鈥榃hen I finish this race, I鈥檓 going to have a big hamburger and French fries and a coke,鈥欌 says听Blende. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 good too鈥攚hatever gets you through.鈥 The same goes for comfort foods, athletes tend to crave mac and cheese or chili fries for the same reason most people do: they have headaches, they don鈥檛 feel great, and comfort food fixes it, at least temporarily. 鈥淵our body may take the rational, logical thing you need [like protein] and turn it into a certain craving because egg whites aren鈥檛 going to do it for you鈥攜ou鈥檙e not going to be dreaming of egg whites鈥 to get through tough moments,听Blende听says.听

As for cravings on rest days after a big training block or an endurance event,听Blende听says that has to do with adaptation; your body gets used to the high volume of exercise and the calories needed to sustain it and 鈥渋t鈥檚 too soon for your body to realize you鈥檙e not training. It can鈥檛 switch on a dime like that,鈥澨鼴lende听says. That鈥檚 when you need to ask yourself if you really need the calories or just want them out of habit.听

The Foods Athletes Crave

Lynsey Dyer: Big Mountain Skier.听
鈥淵ou think you鈥檙e going to have deep moments while training, or on the skin track, or hiking, or mountain biking. But all you鈥檙e doing is thinking about food.鈥 Dyer typically envisions the 鈥渇reaking cheesiest thing I can imagine,鈥 which is usually chile relleno or cheese enchiladas. On her last 50-mile mountain bike ride, it was beer and a bacon cheeseburger鈥斺渙rganic, grass fed, of course.鈥澨

Jenn Shelton: Ultrarunner
Shelton has a thing for cheese tamales 鈥溾檆uz you can put them in your pack and they get all hot and they kind of cook themselves,鈥 she says. She also craves Coke and Capri-Sun. Lots of it. 鈥淚 want a Camelbak bladder in the shape of Capri-Sun and filled with Capri-Sun,鈥 she says.听

Nat Young: Surfer
鈥淪ometimes I鈥檓 surfing for five or six hours straight, and the only reason I get out of the water is because I鈥檓 too hungry to keep going,鈥 says the 24-year-old athlete. 鈥淪weets sound amazing when I鈥檓 out on the water. Cookies, cereal or anything like that, probably because it鈥檚 quick and easy. But sometimes it鈥檚 burritos or nachos. I can eat two burritos in a sitting when I鈥檓 really hungry.鈥澨

Amelia Boone: Spartan and Tough Mudder World Champion听
鈥淚 dream of peanut M&Ms. If an aid station has peanut M&Ms, I will clear them out,鈥 Boone says. But only during long races. Apr猫s race? 鈥淚 don鈥檛 normally drink diet soda, but for some reason post-race, the first thing I want is a massive Diet Coke. And potato chips. When I was in law school, I鈥檇 have a Diet Coke as a reward, like 鈥極K, I got through 100 pages of reading,鈥 so now it鈥檚 a reward type of thing and when I finish a race.鈥

Sasha DiGiulian: Rock Climber
The 22-year-old tends to go for turkey jerky. 鈥淲hen I am climbing for longer periods of time I prefer salty to sweet which is weird because normally my 12 o鈥檆lock cheat is a cookie or ice cream.鈥澨
