The 7 Best DIY 国产吃瓜黑料 Rigs from Overland Expo West 2025

Most of the vehicles displayed in the booths at Overland Expo West are showpieces. They鈥檝e been built to catch your eye and highlight the newest gear. There鈥檚 nothing wrong with these adventure rigs鈥攖hey鈥檙e works of art that any overlander would be excited to drive. But, because they sit at the very top of the overland gear pyramid, they don鈥檛 exactly represent the reality of everyday overlanding.

Consequently, our team always spends a day out in the nearby campgrounds. It鈥檚 out there, under the trees and in the dirt, where you find trucks, vans, and other creations that represent the best of DIY culture and showcase the kind of rigs that people actually use on global adventures. Here are our favorite DIY overlanding rigs from this year.

Reimagining the History of Skiing, One Photo at a Time

While visiting the lodge at Idaho鈥檚 Sun Valley Resort a few years ago, Colombian-American photographer noticed something disconcerting about the pictures lining the walls. In the images, which date back to the ski hill鈥檚 opening in 1936, nearly everyone was white. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when I got the idea鈥攈ow cool would it be to re-create these, except centering people of color?鈥 Jaramillo says.

With the support of the resort and a grant from the nonprofit , Jaramillo began work on a project called , tapping a team of other creatives to source clothing and props to reshoot 13 of the original photographs. Models included friends who are snow-sports athletes, Colour the Trails founder , and Indigenous activist Quannah ChasingHorse. 鈥淲e wanted people who are living the mission of this project,鈥 Jaramillo says. She hopes that A New Winter, which goes on display at the Sun Valley Museum of Art in January, inspires a broader conversation about diversifying the slopes. 鈥淚 believe that art directly influences culture,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檓 doing this for all the young Black and brown girls and boys out there who don鈥檛 see themselves when they walk into a ski resort.鈥

Building Resilience

Kitzsteinhorn, a 10,000-foot Austrian peak that sits in the Alps just south of Salzburg, is not considered a draw for serious mountaineers. But to a group of Ukrainian refugees who climbed it last August, as part of a summer camp hosted by the U.S.-based , Kitzsteinhorn symbolized hope.

Filmmaker and photographer Max Lowe documented his second trip to Healing Base Camp, a weeklong program for families whose lives were upended by the violence of Russia鈥檚 invasion of Ukraine. A mix of talk therapy, art classes, and guided mountaineering expeditions, the camp is about building resilience. 鈥淎ll of these people lost someone far too soon,鈥 says Lowe, who is based in Bozeman, Montana. 鈥淭here鈥檚 beauty in the fact that they鈥檙e showing up here and learning how to move forward.鈥

Lowe first visited in the summer of 2022 for his documentary , released on Netflix in 2023. The film follows ten-year-old Milana and her grandmother Olga as they immerse themselves in camp activities. Milana, initially scared to climb, gains confidence throughout the week and eventually summits Kitzsteinhorn. Both she and Olga attended again when Lowe did. 鈥淭he difference in Milana from the year before was remarkable,鈥 he says. 鈥淪he pushed through everything and just really seemed like a changed girl.鈥

Experience Frontier Culture at America鈥檚 Oldest Endurance Horse Race

The Western States Trail Ride, also known as the Tevis Cup, was born in 1955 out of a simple question: Could modern-day riding horses travel 100 miles in 24 hours? Several riders set out from Lake Tahoe, California, and journeyed southwest through the Sierra Nevada to the town of Auburn, proving the answer to be a strong yes. In the years and decades that followed, equestrians would retrace the trip as an annual race, testing themselves on a grueling route with more than 35,000 feet of elevation change along rugged mountain trails.

Damien Maloney, a Los Angeles鈥揵ased photographer, learned about the event from a neighbor and was drawn to the competition鈥檚 Old West ethos, so different from the strict equestrian tradition he knew growing up in Waco, Texas. 鈥淚t was interesting to see a horse culture that isn鈥檛 fussy or fancy,鈥 says Maloney. 鈥淚t鈥檚 humans and horses, and everyone鈥檚 having fun, but it鈥檚 still really hard. There isn鈥檛 any pageantry.鈥 In the summer of 2023, he set out to document that unpretentious spirit, capturing horses and people as they navigated the dusty trails.

Our Favorite New Off-Road Gear from Overland Expo West 2024

国产吃瓜黑料 has been covering Overland Expo West for the past nine years. We鈥檝e watched as the show went from a small gathering of hardcore overland veterans to a place where thousands of people, including many who are new to this type of travel (loosely defined as “backpacking out of an off-road vehicle”), come to check out the latest rigs and gear. Some people might gripe that all this growth has diluted the community and crowded out once pristine, and barely known, backcountry spots. But if you take a broader view you can appreciate how overlanding has introduced a whole new community of people to the outdoors. It鈥檚 also been a lot of fun to watch brands take overland gear to places we never imagined a decade ago.

After spending three days at this year鈥檚 Overland Expo West, held in Flagstaff, Arizona in mid-May, we rounded-up the best new gear we saw, keeping both veterans and newbies in mind and choosing products that we thought were not only innovative but also had a wide audience. Here are our picks.

Wzrd

After working in the bike world for more than a decade, Emma May started making her own frames in 2019. Each bike has a few signature design features, including a steel frame, a rigid or low-travel fork, and a long chainstay. Other elements, from the number of water-bottle holders to the vibrant paint jobs (courtesy of May鈥檚 partner, April Lockwood), can be customized. Wzrd鈥檚 mission is personal. 鈥淚 came out about a year into Wzrd,鈥 May says. 鈥淎nd I had so many queer people in the bike industry reach out to me鈥攏ot just to buy something but also to talk about being queer in the industry. I don鈥檛 want to just be a brand that sells bikes. I want Wzrd to be a welcoming space for queer and trans people.鈥 鈥擬iyo McGinn

The Wall of Death Is Still Alive, Thanks to These Devoted Riders

The Wall of Death, a cylindrical wooden stage where talented riders pull off all sorts of stunts on motorcycles, was once a mainstay of American carnivals. Only a handful are in use today, passion projects for a few dedicated fanatics. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e not going to make too much money doing this,鈥 says New York City photographer Jay Kolsch. 鈥淵ou have to maintain it while you鈥檙e on the road, and build it up and take it down everywhere you go. It has to be something you care deeply about.鈥

Kolsch went to a carnival in upstate New York to document Danny Weil鈥檚 Wall of Death over several days in the summer of 2022. At the time, a back injury prevented Weil from riding the Wall he鈥檇 built in his Florida backyard, but he continues to feature it in carnivals up and down the East Coast. Initially, Kolsch was drawn to the discipline and athleticism involved in riding the Wall. But ultimately, he decided on a different approach. Instead of focusing exclusively on the flashy motorcycles and death-defying riding, 鈥淚 also wanted to give space to the Wall itself,鈥 Kolsch says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 beautiful to see this imperfect thing someone built with their own two hands give joy to a bunch of children and thrill all these people.鈥

In Austria, ski racing is so much more than just an athletic pursuit

Scenes From the 2023 Hahnenkamm Downhill

Every January, tens of thousands of ski-racing fans flock to Kitzb眉hel, Austria, for the Hahnenkamm Races, an event photographer and lifelong skier Kari Medig calls 鈥渢he Wimbledon of ski racing.鈥 But instead of swatting a fuzzy ball back and forth, athletes hurtle down icy slopes and through blind corners at upward of 75 miles per hour. And rather than don swanky 鈥渟mart casual鈥 attire, spectators come decked out in vintage ski gear. The downhill race is the start of a three-day spectacle that includes slalom, super-G, and sprint competitions. Integral to the scene are the crowds themselves: the events draw up to 50,000 attendees. Austria鈥檚 biggest newspaper sends a couple dozen reporters to document the frenzy, and military cadets work long days shoveling snow and prepping the courses. Growing up in British Columbia, Medig watched VHS recordings of the Hahnenkamm after days on the slopes with his local ski team. He went on to document a wide range of subjects as a photographer, but skiing has always been his favorite. So when he was given media credentials to photograph the 2023 Hahnenkamm鈥攑lacing him closer to the action than spectators get鈥攈e knew he couldn鈥檛 pass up the opportunity. It was a technical challenge shooting the skiers as they blurred past at impossible speeds, and a logistical one too, since he wanted to capture the vibe among bystanders. 鈥淭he fans and their connection to the race was so special,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t felt like a place where people love the sport as much as I do.鈥

鈥淭here are no other everglades in the world,鈥 conservationist Marjory Stoneman Douglas wrote in 1947 in The Everglades: River of Grass. 鈥淭hey are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth, remote, never wholly known.鈥 To sisters and , who grew up in a small town near Everglades National Park, the only way to know this river of grass is to wade through its boggy expanse. 鈥淲alking into the swamp brings you off the paved trails and into the canopy of trees, where you鈥檒l hear, smell, touch, and see the Everglades in a much more intimate manner,鈥 Evie says. For the portfolio on the following pages, the two photographers wanted to join as many park-ranger-led as they鈥檙e called, as possible. During these guided tours, they captured the park鈥檚 towering mangroves and thick saw grass, its iconic alligators and long-legged herons. Some of the sisters鈥 earliest recollections of the Everglades come from elementary school field trips, when they held baby gators and trudged through swampland. 鈥淲hen I got older, what remained with me were physical and spiritual memories of feeling connected to the earth,鈥 Melanie says. 鈥淭his is a subtly gorgeous place that needs to be protected. We don鈥檛 want the pictures to be the only thing left.鈥
