The 7 Best DIY 国产吃瓜黑料 Rigs from Overland Expo West 2025
We scoured the attendee campgrounds to find unique overlanding rigs built with real ingenuity聽
Most of the vehicles displayed in the booths at Overland Expo West are showpieces. They鈥檝e been built to catch your eye and highlight the newest gear. There鈥檚 nothing wrong with these adventure rigs鈥攖hey鈥檙e works of art that any overlander would be excited to drive. But, because they sit at the very top of the overland gear pyramid, they don鈥檛 exactly represent the reality of everyday overlanding.
Consequently, our team always spends a day out in the nearby campgrounds. It鈥檚 out there, under the trees and in the dirt, where you find trucks, vans, and other creations that represent the best of DIY culture and showcase the kind of rigs that people actually use on global adventures. Here are our favorite DIY overlanding rigs from this year.

1995 Ford F150 XL with Four Wheel Camper Granby
John McDonough is a Craigslist wizard. The proof lies in his 1987 Four Wheel Camper Granby that he found online in near-perfect condition. This slide-in camper still has the original brightly-colored cushions from nearly 40 years ago, that dark-brown faux wood panelling we remember from the 80s, a sink, stove, cushy bed, and so much charm you can鈥檛 help but want to camp inside. He matched the camper with a 30-year-old Ford truck that was used by the Forest Service and still has its original paint job, with only 129,000 miles on the engine. McDonough added extra springs and air bags to handle the camper weight and a winch up front, but otherwise has stayed away from overdoing the build. 鈥淚 love these older vehicles because they鈥檙e built to work, and they鈥檙e easy to fix,鈥 he said.

1997 Airstream B 190
There鈥檚 a strong community of people who love the B 190 because it鈥檚 a Ford van with a giant V-10 engine that鈥檚 been designed and outfitted by Airstream, which is legendary for its tow-behind campers. Like many B 190 owners, Richard Kalina converted his from a cruiser van to an off-road monster by adding four-wheel drive and raising the suspension six inches so he could throw on 35-inch tires. Inside, the van still has its original, gorgeous oak cabinets, plus a stove, sink, heater, and bed. Kalina lives in Sand Point, Idaho and said the van is primarily used as his snow-capable hotel on wheels when he travels up to Canada to chase powder on his monoski.

2024 Grenadier Station Wagon聽
Last year, we didn鈥檛 see many customized Grenadiers because the vehicles had just launched and aftermarket companies needed more time to release their customized products. One year later, however, we found several, including this ultra-clean, well-specced version owned by Terry Woller from Illinois. The biggest upgrade Woller added was a : the roof of the truck had been cut off and replaced by an integrated rooftop tent that can be accessed from inside the vehicle (as opposed to an external ladder). The truck also has top-grade King suspension, 35-inch tires, and is triple-locked for unmatched off-road capability. 鈥淚 personally think it鈥檚 the best-looking four-wheel-drive vehicle on the market, and it鈥檚 made to handle anything off-road,鈥 Woller said.

2006 Lexus LX470
The thing that stood out the most when we stepped into this one-of-a-kind camper was how much room was available. It didn鈥檛 look very big from the outside, but inside it felt cavernous, with enough room for a double-decker bed (one king, one queen), a shower, a dinette, and an 87-liter fridge. All that space is thanks to owner 鈥檚 smart planning. Trahan drew everything up to his own exact specifications and then had it built by , who runs Overland Global and specializes in making custom campers. Trahan said the Lexus SUV that holds the camper (an LX 470 is essentially the same thing as a 100 Series Toyota Land Cruiser) does fine with the extra weight and cruises on the highway and up gnarly dirt roads.

Unimog U500鈥擥lobal Expedition Vehicles Pangea聽
This giant overland rig is imposing because of its size, and was even more eye-catching because of the roof, which extends to 16 feet when raised. All the headroom allows the owner, Hunter Bond, to squeeze in a giant, comfortable king-size bed on a raised platform. The vehicle is also tricked out with everything you need for a true global adventure, including 46-inch military-grade tires that he can air up or down while driving, a 140-gallon diesel gas tank for extended range, three sets of lockers, two freezers and a fridge, a 25,000-pound winch, and security cameras around the entire truck so you can sleep anywhere in peace.

2024 Tesla Cybertruck聽
Most Cybertrucks are just trophies that people never take on dirt. But that鈥檚 not the case for Troy and Vickie Overby. Troy spent a lot of time modifying the truck so he could get 35-inch tires onto it for serious off-roading. The couple slept in the truck鈥檚 that鈥檚 designed to slide onto the back of the truck, comes with a handy awning, and leaves room for storage boxes to slide underneath. One other feature that stood out was a custom wrap that can be repaired with the heat from a hair dryer, in case the truck rubs against a tree or someone keys it in protest.

2022 Ford Transit AWD Van聽
From the outside, there鈥檚 nothing special about this van. It was one of many in a sea of vans we saw parked at Overland Expo. But its background makes it interesting. Owned by Jim and Katya Preston, the van is the star of their and has a small but cult-like following of people who love how rowdy and adventurous the couple get in a vehicle that鈥檚 not really made for serious off-roading. Scan their channel and you鈥檒l find good-natured videos narrated by Jim about all the scary trails they鈥檙e willing to climb with the van, which, while all-wheel-drive and strapped with a two-inch lift and AT tires, doesn鈥檛 have the clearance or off-road chops of something like a truck. But with a little gusto, and some high-quality driving skills, the couple are able to safely power through obstacles that would stop a vast majority of other van owners.
