Freeze-dried food isn鈥檛 at the top of anyone鈥檚 cuisine list, but some Mountain House meals can taste like a Michelin-starred dinner after a few聽days on the trail. I never go on a backpacking trip without at least one packet of ($7).听
My love affair with the meal began about fours years ago when I was planning my first backpacking trip. I saw the blue packet聽on the shelves in REI and my taste buds lost control. My favorite breakfast meal in a convenient聽backcountry package? I had to buy it.聽
The meal has since emotionally supported me through disastrous Boundary Waters trips, soggy hikes through the Superior Hiking Trail, and even long days at the office. The texture and taste are spot on and I'd be hard-pressed to make a better version at home.
The only downside is that each package contains a whopping聽900 milligrams of sodium鈥攁lmost half of your daily suggested intake. So make sure to drink plenty of water and eat it primarily when exerting physical energy. But even still, it鈥檚 incredibly filling and delicious. If you haven鈥檛 tried it, stock up now. You can thank me later.聽
