There鈥檚 a game that Jesse Bowen, who runs the bar in Denver, likes to play.

Here鈥檚 how it goes: 鈥淚 put six shots of amaro on the bar.鈥 Amaro is an Italian liqueur which, with its bittersweet,聽herbaceous flavors, is really having a moment.

Next: He has a customer try each one, telling them about the notes of cloves or anise or mint.

Finally:聽Bowen reveals that one of the shots isn鈥檛 actually an amaro. It鈥檚 J盲germeister, the mid-nineties聽party staple that we all thought we鈥檇 aged out of.

But what if, instead of aging out of J盲germeister, we鈥檙e actually just now growing into it? That鈥檚 the hope of Germany鈥檚聽Mast family, who have owned J盲germeister since its inception in 1934. The company is embarking on a major rebranding effort, trying to shake J盲ger鈥檚 frat-kid image. The question is:聽Will it work?

The interesting thing about J盲germeister is that聽slamming it in bombs is purely an American invention. In Germany, J盲germeister has a totally different reputation. How do I know this? Well, as a 17-year-old exchange student in Germany, I remember being stoked to do so many J盲ger bombs. But the teens we met were confused when we asked in fractured German: Wo sind die J盲germeister Sch眉sse? (Translation: Where are聽the聽J盲germeister shots?)

鈥淯p until six or seven years ago, in Germany, J盲germeister had this generational issue,鈥 says Willy Shine, the company鈥檚 U.S. brand manager (or brand meister, as J盲ger calls it). 鈥淵oung Germans thought, This is what our grandparents and parents drank.鈥 He adds that young people abroad are starting to embrace J盲germeister聽but, apparently, as a teen, I was essentially asking my German friends to sit down with their grandparents for an after-dinner drink. Great.

Originally crafted for sipping after the hunt and harvest, J盲germeister literally translates to 鈥渉unt master.鈥澛燚istilled with 56 ingredients (the full recipe is a secret), it鈥檚 dark, bitter, herbaceous, and just a touch sweet. It got its hold-my-hair-back reputation in the States thanks to creative marketing. 鈥淲hen it first came to the U.S. in the 1980s, the flavor profile, no one understood what to do with it,鈥 says Shine. Stymied, the company hired 鈥淛盲gerettes鈥 to pass out ice-cold shots at college bars and in spring-break locales. Shine says they didn鈥檛 purposely introduce the J盲ger bomb, but they didn鈥檛 fight it聽either. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not mad about it,鈥 he says. The company聽sold a lot of J盲ger in bomb format.

J盲germeister is rebranding聽and hoping that millennials and Gen Xers forget that J盲ger was responsible for the nights they, well, forgot.

But Gen Z as previous generations, and millennials are getting a little old for the shots! shots! shots! shtick. So J盲germeister is rebranding聽and hoping that millennials and Gen Xers forget that J盲ger was responsible for the nights they, well, forgot. 聽聽聽聽

Rebranding is a tricky venture. Just look at New Coke, or Radio Shack鈥檚 attempt to become 鈥淭he Shack.鈥 More recently, Arby鈥檚 tried to make itself out as a fresh-food restaurant, which, well鈥攊t鈥檚 Arby鈥檚. The positive examples, like PBR becoming the drink of choice for hipsters in the 2010s, and Old Spice getting cool after a series of viral ads, are tantalizing. If you get it just right, it鈥檚 a cash windfall.

J盲germeister is recruiting bartenders to help. This is smart, not only because bartenders influence what patrons order, but because bartenders loved聽amaros鈥擩盲germeister is basically a German version of an amaro鈥攂efore the rest of us even knew what they were. 鈥淲e tend to like flavors like that,鈥 says Brian Prugalidad, a bartender at San Diego鈥檚 .

J盲ger聽made聽an even smarter move when it聽created聽Hubertus Circle, an invite-only club for master mixologists. It鈥檚 been active overseas since 2011, but now the brand聽is inviting American bartenders into the guild. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an honor to be asked,鈥 says Prugalidad, adding that the regular meetings with his city鈥檚 best bartenders have聽become a looked-forward-to event. Members of Hubertus Circle are not paid, but Prugalidad says he doesn鈥檛 need bribing to spread the good word about J盲ger. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great product. I couldn鈥檛 recommend something I didn鈥檛 love,鈥 he says.

Meanwhile, J盲germeister just released an oak-aged, top-shelf version called .

Still, getting people to retry something they may have overindulged in in the past may be tough. Bowen has had patrons send back a cocktail when they found out it was made with J盲germeister. 鈥淏ut I鈥檝e also had them order several more,鈥 he adds. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a perception thing,鈥 he says, referring to his amaro shot game. 鈥淲hen no one knew what it was, no one batted an eye.鈥
