In February, Chloe Kim made history as . Since then, she鈥檚 been prioritizing her mental health. 罢丑补迟鈥檚 included the major decision to sit聽out the 2022鈥23 snowboarding season, she said in an interview with last month.
鈥淲hen you train for something for four years, and it鈥檚 done, you kind of just don鈥檛 want to do anything. Finally, you have a break,鈥 Kim told 国产吃瓜黑料. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been nice not to think about anything next, because I鈥檓 naturally so competitive that if I think about the next step, I鈥檒l just stress myself out about getting there.鈥
Since the 22-year-old returned home from Beijing, 鈥渢hings have been pretty chill,鈥 Kim says鈥攁 stark contrast to what she calls the 鈥渃haotic鈥 turn her life took after the 2018 Olympics. Overwhelmed by the international attention she was receiving after the Games in Pyeongchang, Kim 聽(it didn鈥檛 stay there for long). She took some time away from the slopes and enrolled at Princeton University in the fall of 2019. , she returned to competition with a win at the Laax Open in January 2021, and took her sixth X Games title in the lead-up to Beijing.
Her biggest helper navigating the anxiety and pressure has been her dog, Reese, a miniature Australian shepherd she adopted in 2016. 鈥淚 think that dogs just know if you鈥檙e feeling down. They can really sense your energy,鈥 Kim says. 鈥淲hen I鈥檓 feeling stressed, she won鈥檛 leave my side. She鈥檚 never judging me鈥攊t鈥檚 always just love and support and cuddles.鈥

Reese, who Kim describes as 鈥減retty high-energy but chill at the same time,鈥 is a celebrity in her own right. The photogenic pup shared with Kim in 2018, wearing her mom鈥檚 Olympic gold medal around her neck. And she has more than 9,000 followers on her Instagram account, . 鈥淪he鈥檚 a hot commodity, for real,鈥 Kim laughs. 鈥淎nd now she鈥檚 booked out. My girl is paying the bills.鈥
Most recently, they鈥檝e teamed up with the dog food brand Purina Pro Plan on 听颈苍蝉辫颈谤别 people to get active with their dogs. For every mile people log on Strava from April 19 to May 17, the brand is donating ten cents to , an organization of professional athletes dedicated to homeless pets. 鈥淲e鈥檙e encouraging people to get out there and give back to a great cause,鈥 Kim says. 鈥淩eese and I have a bunch of hikes and activities planned, so we鈥檒l be part of hitting the million miles.鈥
What鈥檚 Kim doing next to prioritize her 鈥渕e time鈥?聽鈥淚鈥檓 gonna go on vacations and celebrate another great accomplishment.鈥
And when Kim does return to competition, Reese will be there for her鈥攅ven from thousands of miles away. 鈥淭he morning of my contests, I always get a picture of Reese that my mom sends me. It鈥檚 just become a tradition,鈥 she says.
