Balance, core strength, and a sense of risk: they鈥檙e all crucial for skiing, and they all change when you decide to have a kid. But that doesn鈥檛 have to听stop you from skiing while you鈥檙e building a family. Skier Ingrid Backstrom was on snow until ten听days before she had her daughter, and snowboarder , last year鈥檚 Snowboard Magazine Rider of the Year, was bringing her son to snowboarding events听when he was just two months old. 鈥淭he hardest part was getting out of the house,鈥 Fasani says. 鈥淏ut once I was outside or traveling, I loved being back on the move.鈥

We asked big-mountain telemark skier听,听a mom to triplet boys,听and two-time Freeride World Tour champion听, who听owns听 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and has a young daughter,听for some insight into staying strong and getting into the mountains while you鈥檙e pregnant or juggling small听kids. The women were quick to point out that every听pregnancy is different, and individualexperiences will, of course, vary. But both said that being flexible and open to change has helped them thrive听as parentsand as athletes.

Don鈥檛 Forget to Strength Train

鈥淚t is so important to keep your muscles strong and balanced to prevent injury while pregnant,鈥 Wright says. 鈥淚t also will help with labor and recovery after pregnancy.鈥 Wright likes to do a lower-body, ski-focused series of moves with plenty of lunges and squats that many women can do safely well into听pregnancy. After giving birth, Wright felt out听of shape, especially in her core and pelvis.听鈥淚 had to rebuild stamina, so mixing total body strength with cardio was very important,鈥 she says.听

Ski as Long as You鈥檙e Comfortable

Both moms learned that their bodies听would clue them in听when they needed to back off or听when they could push it. 鈥淪kiing was the one thing that felt good while I was pregnant,鈥 Wright says. 鈥淚 felt most like myself on my skis. It was so much easier than walking.鈥 She was cut off from a lot of activity a month before giving birth to her daughter, but she skied mellow terrain up until the end. Kelly, on the other hand,听stopped skiing at 24 weeks听after barely being able to walk following听a powder day.

Get Creative with Planning

Kelly鈥檚 family has found plenty of ways听to work through the logistics听of getting three toddlers (and two parents) on skis. They claimed an unused corner of the Kirkwood Resort lodge as their zone and invited a bunch of families to come ski with them at the California mountain every weekend听so they could trade off child care and rotate ski shifts. It became so popular that Kirkwood听made it an official, free amenity: it set up games and designated the space听a family area. Other improvisations didn鈥檛 work out quite so well: Kelly once pumped breast milk before skiing and hid the liquid in a听Ziploc bag in a snowbank, only to watch ravens fly off with it.听

Make Your Own Calls About Risk

Having a kid (or three) will likely change your desire to push it. 鈥淚鈥檓 laser-focused on making smart decisions now,鈥 Kelly says. Specifically, she says she鈥檚 more cautious听than she used to be in new terrain, on听unfamiliar snowpack, or when she鈥檚 feeling tired. 鈥淢y risk tolerance varies day to day.听I鈥檓 smarter than I used to be, which may also be a combination of more experience and knowing I can鈥檛 come home hurt.鈥

Adjust Your Expectations

Wright says she struggled physically and mentally with pregnancy, because she wasn鈥檛 able to work out as hard as she normally did. She missed the endorphin rush听and had to remind听herself that the slower pace wouldn鈥檛 last forever. Kelly worried that former听ski partners would be impatient with her鈥攐r ditch her entirely鈥攐nce she had kids. 鈥淟ots of it is in your head,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e a mom, everyone thinks you鈥檙e amazing for even getting out and skiing, so don鈥檛 feel the need to prove yourself or totally keep up. People will wait.鈥
