Nearly three months after the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) released a lengthy report that detailed allegations of doping (and months after stepping down as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer-fighting charity he founded in 1997), Lance Armstrong is said to be considering publicly admitting that he used the performance-enhancing drugs he has been accused of taking during his years as the world’s best professional cyclist. Why? He has told anti-doping officials and associates that he is mulling the admission of guilt, according to the , so that he can resume his athletic career.

Asked by the Times when Armstrong might confess, Tim Herman, his longtime lawyer, said: “I do not know about that. I suppose anything is possible, for sure. Right now, that’s really not on the table.” But before Armstrong can come clean, he will have to settle a number of open cases, including a federal whistle-blower case “in which he and several team officials from Armstrong’s United States Postal Service cycling team are accused of defrauding the government by allowing doping on the squad when the team’s contract with the Postal Service explicitly forbade it,” according to the Times.

While Herman denied that Armstrong has talked to Travis Tygart, USADA’s chief executive, the Times cites sources who say otherwise. In addition to Tygart, whom he spoke to in “an effort to mitigate the lifetime ban he received for playing a lead role in doping on his Tour-winning teams,” the source says Armstrong has also met with David Howman, the current director general of the World Anti-Doping Agency. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s code, athletes who admit to guilt may be eligible for a reduced punishment.

Barbara Casey, who worked for the American Humane Association for 13 years, most recently as the director of production in the group’s film and television unit, has filed a lawsuit against her former employer, HBO, and Stewart Productions. In the lawsuit, recently filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Casey says that she was wrongfully terminated after attempting to report criminal activity she witnessed on the set of Luck, the David Milch-produced horse racing drama starring Dustin Hoffman that was in March after three animals died during filming.

“AHA bowed to political and financial pressure and refused to report the Production Defendants’ conduct to the authorities,” according to the suit, in which Casey describes observing drugged, sick, and underweight horses being used for work on the show. Casey also argues that, in order to save time and money, Luck producers would intentionally misidentify horses so that AHA animal safety representatives could not track their medical histories.

“We took every precaution to ensure that our horses were treated humanely and with the utmost care, exceeding every safeguard of all protocols and guidelines required of the production,” HBO told in a prepared statement. “Barbara Casey was not an employee of HBO, and any questions regarding her employment should be directed to the AHA.”

A 60-foot finback whale, the second largest animal species in the world after only blue whales, beached itself at Breezy Point in Queens on Wednesday. Though firefighters and police started spraying the sea mammal immediately after it was discovered in an attempt to keep it alive, biologists said the whale appeared to have died Thursday morning. It was “not moving a lot,” Mendy Garron, a regional specialist for the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries, told the AFP. “In many of these cases, when an animal of this size strands, they are usually compromised in some form or another.”

Because the whale is located on National Park Service land (in the Gateway National Recreation Area), Fisheries is hoping to borrow heavy equipment from the NPS to conduct an on-site necropsy. “The park service is also expected to help dispose of the whale’s body,” according to the . Garron, the NOAA specialist, is checking with local landfills and also considering burial options.

Led by Gino Fornaciari, the director of the University of Pisa’s pathology museum, a team of Italian researchers have exhumed the bodies of Giovanni de’ Medici (also known as Giovanni dalle Bande Nere for the black mourning bands he wore following Pope Leo X’s death) and his wife, Maria Salviati. Buried in the Medici Chapels in Florence, Giovanni was a member of the wealthy Florentine Medici family, but also one of the most celebrated mercenary soldiers of the Renaissance. Fornaciari’s team is conducting a “‘thorough analysis’ which includes medical, paleopathological, and anthropological investigations of the remains,” according to Discovery News. Their hope is to better understand the life and death of the army commander, who died at the age of 28 after being hit by a cannon ball while fighting troops marching toward Rome.

Even though it erupted for the first time in more than a century on August 6, shooting boulders up to one-meter-wide into the air, Mount Tongariro, which sits on New Zealand’s North Island, is perhaps best known as the neighbor of Mount Ngauruhoe, the stand-in for the fictional Mount Doom in Peter Jackson’s award-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tongariro came to life again earlier this week when a five-minute eruption shot ash, smoke, and gas 4km into the sky. The eruption, which was followed by 15 minutes of volcanic activity, led to the cancelation of several flights as air traffic coordinators feared volcanic ash, which contains pieces of glass, could clog the turbine engines of commercial aircraft.

While the immediate threat has passed, experts monitoring the mountain predict another sudden eruption of similar size could take place within the next couple of weeks. “Should a further eruption occur, a new national advisory or warning would be issued,” according to the . There’s also the possibility, volcanologists from GNS, a government-owned company that focuses on geology, geophysics, and nuclear science, warn, of a much larger event.

In the suburban town of Brookline, Massachusetts (pop. 58,732), residents are getting fed up with aggressive turkeys. Karen Halvorson, who lives in the Aspinwall Hill neighborhood, is so frustrated that she’s now working with town leaders to organize meetings with locals so that they can vent and brainstorm an action plan. “I can’t believe we’re living this way,” she told a after turkeys attacked her truck, her front door, and her person. Halvorson was on one of her routine walks through town when she was charged by a band of three turkeys. She moved to the center of the street, but that wasn’t enough to deter the birds. “The turkey flew in my face and scratched my neck,” said Halvorson, who now carries a hiking stick she picked up at a nearby store for protection. The only upside? Increased work for the local animal control team. “Some people going to work and they’ve been chased by turkeys,” said animal control officer Pierre Verrier, who now spends most of his mornings keeping birds away from Brookline High School.

It’s Sandy Island on Google Maps and Sable Island on others. But, in fact, the 60-square-mile island in the South Pacific, nestled between New Caledonia and Australia, doesn’t exist at all. “We saw this mysterious island on all of the scientific maps and weather maps but not on this one navigational chart that was on our ship,” Ph.D. student Sabin Zahirovic told . “So we decided to go see if it was actually there.” Zahirovic and the others on the research team aboard the RV Southern Surveyor planned to arrive at the non-site of the non-island in the middle of the day, but a navigational error set them back and they cruised past in the middle of the night. “The captain was actually quite nervous because the island was showing up on all the maps,” said Zahirovic, who s studying tectonics in the eastern Coral Sea. “We were watching all of our depth-sounding equipment. Luckily for us the sea floor turned out to be very deep there.”

The non-discovery raises some serious questions about our scientific understanding of the ocean. This latest research will result in the scrubbing of the island from most maps, but it has bigger implications. “All the scientific cartography relies on these maps, and numerical simulations of waves and currents depend on size of these land forms,” Zahirovic said. “It just goes to show the oceans are so underexposed. It’s actually really shocking that we haven’t not found more islands.”

For the fourth consecutive year more Americans are traveling 50 miles or more for the Thanksgiving holiday, according to AAA. “We are on a slow climb back,” said AAA New York spokesman Robert Sinclair Jr., referring to the severe economic downturn in 2008 that led to a 25 percent decline in holiday travel. “It’s a climb, but it is a slow one, and perhaps not enough for people to really make a significant commitment to travel.”

Most of the nearly 44 million Americans who are traveling for the weekend鈥攖he majority by automobile鈥攃an expect clear skies and pleasant weather. “Airports across most of the country faced few delays on Wednesday,” according to . The only major problem area was Chicago, where a thick fog forced hundreds of delays at both O’Hare and Midway, the city’s two primary airports. Even there, though, flights were typically off the ground about 40 to 45 minutes later than scheduled.

Our modern-day version of Thanksgiving in the United States is commonly traced back to a 17th-century feast in Plymouth, Massachusetts, that was held in celebration of a good harvest. There was plenty of food for everyone then, and there’s plenty of food now鈥攑erhaps too much. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans end up throwing away 35 percent of the turkey (not including bones) they buy for holiday gatherings. “We love to have the big feast at holiday time,” Dana Gunder, food and agriculture scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, told . “That results in a lot more extra food. People do leftovers for a day or two, but people are sick by day three. I think it’s just basic math.”

Tossing all of that turkey isn’t just a waste of money (it adds up to more than $280 million), it’s also terrible for our environment. “Growing a pound of turkey meat uses 468 gallons of water and releases 12 pounds of CO2 emissions according to a report by the Environmental Working Group,” Discovery News pointed out. That’s “equivalent to driving your car 11 miles and taking a 94-minute shower.” With Americans projected to purchase 736 million pounds of the bird for this Thanksgiving (and throw away 204 million pounds), that adds up to 95 billion gallons of water and about one million tons of CO2.
