Do You Know How Hard You Work Out?

Six years have passed since the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (PAG). Researchers funded in part by a grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Faculty of Health at York University, Canada, responded a few weeks ago. Their findings were?: Adults underestimate the intensity level at which they work out.

The PAG report differentiates absolute intensity—the amount of energy expended per minute of activity—from relative intensity, the level of effort required to do an activity. “A general rule of thumb is that two minutes of moderate-intensity activity counts the same as one minute of vigorous-intensity activity,” . Although the absolute-intensity levels might reflect similar energy expenditures, the relative-intensity levels are not the same, and overcompensating with vigorous-intensity workouts so you can get out the door faster in the morning or make it back to work in time can hurt you.

And the more recent study? Researchers started by with the national exercise guidelines. Most were not, but when they were handed a copy, participants felt they could follow or already were following the guidelines, the New York Times reported.

Then they took to the treadmill and were asked to maintain a vigorous-, moderate-, and light-intensity level for three minutes. “Few” ran at 65 percent (desired) of their maximum heart rate when running “moderately,” and “even fewer” ran at 75 percent during their vigorous-intensity stint. When participants ran at “the slowest pace that they felt would qualify as moderate [or] the slowest pace at which someone could expect to gain significant health benefits from the exercise,” about 25 percent of participants met the pace.

Worse: Current reports on U.S. and Canadian adults say that only 15 to 25 percent work out at levels intense enough to meet national guidelines. If participants played up their intensity levels, “the problem of physical inactivity may be even larger,” Dr. Jennifer Kuk, who oversaw the runners, told the New York Times.

Minnesota winters are brutal, even if you have a warm house and a cozy bed to while away the cold nights. Which is why it’s remarkable—or maybe just crazy—that a 17-year-old Boy Scout from the Duluth area voluntarily slept outside for 365 nights straight.

Perched most often seven feet up in a tree near his parents’ house, Rudy Hummel survived 76 subzero nights and multiple snowstorms to raise about $6,000 for Western Lake Superior Habitat for Humanity and the Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. When not at home, Hummel would pitch a tent or crash on a hotel’s deck. According to , he slept outside in 30 different places.

Hummel’s mother reportedly checked on her son only once—on a night when temps reached 27 degrees below zero. “We had an agreement. If he started to shiver, he would come in,” his mother . “He never did.”

Think you could withstand winter in Duluth? Vote for Hummel’s home under the stars in the final round of 国产吃瓜黑料‘s Best Towns bracket.

Neuroscientists from the at the University of Minnesota to a less desirable but immediately gratifying snack look back on the original option with regret.

Researchers developed Restaurant Row, a wheel-spoke maze of food rewards that assessed how long rats would wait for the “,” and considered the rats’ decisions regret-induced. When the scrambling foodies decided not to wait on Restaurant Row and reached for an immediate reward, they often paused and looked back at the snack that didn’t make them wait.

“You can wait at the Chinese restaurant and eat there,” lead researcher David Redish , “or you can say, ‘Forget it. This wait is too long,’ and go to the Indian restaurant across the street.”

Redish admits his findings do not represent the same regret-based synapse in humans and rats, but his team did identify and cater to each rat’s preferred flavor palette, suggesting that rats feel something toward actions they do not take and that the subsequent change in behavior reflects rats’ hasty appetites.

The smartphone-based system for citizen scientists was referenced by ?and?builds off ‘s crowdsourced roadkill trackers, RoadkillGarneau and WildlifeBlitzGarneau.

In WVC Reporter, citizen scientists geotagged the dead animals and reduced location error by 99 percent (in its first year of use) compared to mobile Web applications like RoadkillGarneau, in which users reported the highway name and mile marker. WVC Reporter has aggregated 6,822 carcasses from its mobile users thus far, according to the report, and mapped the data entries on its site.

Look at the pretty pattern of wildlife-vehicle collisions now so you don’t have to gawk at roadkill while you’re driving. Citizen scientists note: Please use good judgment when stopping at roadside to take pictures and collect data.

Houston: The photographs have surfaced.

While rummaging around Johnson Space Center,??executive director Rob Kelso recently came across ?of astronauts trekking across Apollo Valley on Hawaii’s Big Island in the late 1960s and early ’70s. Similar to the surface of the moon, the island’s volcanic, rocky landscape was ideal for testing moon buggies and training astronauts.

Yesterday, NASA’s Pacific Space Center released these photos from Apollo training missions 13, 15, and 17. Among them:

Search on Twitter and see ‘s social media response to the official by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Gina McCarthy for our nation’s power plants to reduce 30 percent of greenhouse gas pollution by 2030.

The document targets some 600 coal-fired power plants and (install new wind farms, solar panels; join cap-and-trade programs) for how to go about achieving the outlined emission-reduction goals.

proposes emission-reduction goals by state. The EPA asks Montana, Ohio, and Maryland (among others) to the cut average pounds of CO2 emitted per megawatt from fossil fuel–fired electricity-generating units by more than 100 marks.

“Right now, there are no national limits to the amount of carbon pollution that existing plants can pump into the air we breathe,” President Obama tagged #ActOnClimate. “None.”

The #ActOnClimate campaign aims to heighten the climate change conversation by trending pictures of families, national and local parks, and damage from extreme weather on Twitter.

Hopping on the trend, quoted earlier this morning: “We will never … have to choose between a healthy economy and a healthy environment,” if we #ActOnClimate and the proposal goes untouched—however?—by Republicans.

Many classical music aficionados deem Bach the supreme gothic composer on the pipe organ, but even he can’t compete with the gaggle of keyboardists who are quickly gaining popularity at the National Zoo in Washington, DC.

“While they wouldn’t encounter a keyboard in the wild, the activity engages their sight, touch, and hearing senses,” the Smithsonian commented on YouTube.

At five seconds, one otter finds middle C, sets up with proper posture (both arms extended, head high), and maintains its version of a high-C melody with its right paw, sharping and flatting deeper notes with its left.

When is the album coming out?
