Swiss company Bold houses the shock inside the frame of their futuristic new enduro bike. Naturally, we had to test it out.

Is This Mountain Bike the Future? Or Just a Gimmick?

is a Swiss brand that鈥檚 known for putting its shocks inside its bikes. It’s novel, sure, but the frame of the new is radical in its own right. Our tester has been riding it for the last few months and he has thoughts. Ultimately, the bike has some genuinely clever, pragmatic design features, but is marred by proprietary and convoluted technical features.

Pros:
  • -Efficient climber
  • -Excellent support through heavy, repeated hits
  • -Integration looks great
  • -The stored repair-kit in the downtube is brilliant
  • -Shines under aggressive riders
Cons:
  • -Weight only feels centered on steeper terrain
  • -Can feel unwieldy, won鈥檛 reward those who don鈥檛 commit to the front
  • -Expensive
  • -Working on the shock was frustrating

Tester Quote

鈥淭his bike is gorgeous, and once I finally got it set up聽 properly it felt like it came alive. Although I鈥檓 not on board with the internal shock or the remote lockout, I am convinced that Bold has created a genuine work of art that you happen to be able to ride flat out down the gnarliest mountains, and I can鈥檛 help but admire that. This bike is for those that can appreciate both demanding riding and the finer things in life, even if it isn鈥檛 without compromise.鈥

Why the Weight of Your Mountain Bike Doesn’t Matter /outdoor-gear/bikes-and-biking/why-mountain-bike-weight-doesnt-matter/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 22:46:27 +0000 /?p=2622426 Why the Weight of Your Mountain Bike Doesn't Matter

Many rider focus on downhill performance above all else. So why the obsession with lightweight parts?

Why the Weight of Your Mountain Bike Doesn't Matter

In all forms of cycling, weight is obviously important. Quite simply, the heavier your bike is the more effort it will require to haul your equipment to the top.

However, unlike road cycling, mountain bikes need to be strong and resilient to damage. Yes, a lightweight mountain bike is important if you’re in a cross-country race, but for most of us the industry鈥檚 pursuit of low weight just gives us higher-priced or lower-performance equipment.

It also doesn鈥檛 acknowledge how a lot of people enjoy riding their bikes, with many of us prioritizing descending confidence over climbing efficiency. Bigger, heavier tires and more powerful brakes may well add weight, but they鈥檒l also make a bike and rider feel far more surefooted on particularly rough or fast terrain.

That鈥檚 not even factoring in the longevity of use parts such as drivetrains. A regular mountain bike rider can comfortably wear out a drivetrain in a season or two. This isn鈥檛 helped by a constant pursuit of low weight and shifting performance, and not great shifting and higher longevity.

Naturally, there will still be many people who enjoy riding light bikes, and there always will be, but if we can learn to view higher weights with less prejudice on our enduro and aggressive trail bikes, I think we’d end up with more performance, for a longer time, at a lower cost. See the video above for the full argument.
