What if high school included kayaking classic whitewater in Patagonia, climbing tufas in Greece, riding A-Line in Whistler, or kiting perfect wind in Brazil鈥攚hile earning a diploma and applying to college? At (WCA), that鈥檚 just a typical semester. For 25 years, WCA has combined rigorous academics with elite-level adventure sports, creating a totally unique high school experience. From the Andes to the Amazon to the Alps, students don鈥檛 just learn鈥攖hey live their education. Climbing Academy alumnus-turned-instructor Kieran Hadley, MTB Academy head of school Riley Gardner, and dean of students Crista Wiles offer a behind-the-scenes look at how WCA is evolving, what makes its students stand out, and why this untraditional path leads to growth far beyond GPA or podiums.

Student Experience

Kieran Hadley, Alumnus and former Climbing Academy Program Director

国产吃瓜黑料: What is the lasting impact of WCA for students?

Kieran Hadley: The ability for WCA students to see the world through the lens of sport and learning is an unreal opportunity. In 2015, my senior year of high school, I climbed with my classmates and teachers in Maple Canyon, Ten Sleep, Joe鈥檚 Canyon, Ulldemolins, Albarrac铆n, Potrero Chico, El Salto, Bishop, and Las Vegas鈥攁ll in one year!

As a WCA Climbing Academy graduate, I left our program equipped with life skills that others often aren鈥檛 able to build in a traditional high school environment. I learned to adapt to new environments and situations more quickly, be a more effective team member, and understand how to set and achieve goals. Most importantly, students in the WCA programs develop new perspectives and social connections that stick with them long after graduation.

After graduating from WCA, my classmates and I approached life in a new way, having gained appreciation for process over achievement and community over competition. I went into my WCA program as a competitive climber and came out of it with an even greater passion for outdoor climbing and a community of friends to share that with, many of whom I鈥檓 still in contact with today. I saw the same evolution in my students when I returned to teach at the school. The WCA alumni I know are the type of people who 鈥済et it鈥濃攚ho chase their goals humbly yet playfully, respect nature and the people around them, and pursue their sport at an elite level.

In what ways did your experience at WCA shape your career path or professional goals?

When I was a WCA student, one of my teachers read a piece of my writing and told me I should consider pursuing journalism. This recommendation from a trusted mentor planted a seed that followed me through my undergraduate education and pushed me to explore the field through internships and my own writing and photography. I eventually decided to go back to school to pursue a career in journalism, but I set that goal aside for a few years because I wanted to go back and teach at WCA, which was absolutely worth it. After teaching, I had saved enough for graduate school, and now I鈥檓 halfway through my master鈥檚 in journalism. So it鈥檚 sort of become a full circle that WCA both inspired and helped me to achieve.

Culture and Curriculum

Riley Gardner, WCA MTB Head of School

How is WCA evolving鈥攚hat鈥檚 available now, and what鈥檚 coming next?

Riley Gardner: World Class has got to be one of the most unique high schools out there. What sets us apart is our dedication to the highest caliber of athletic destinations to promote passion for sport and learning in our students. We are constantly advancing our academic curriculum, improving coaching practices, and expanding our destinations. Our current student-to-teacher ratios are 3:1, with about 20 students per academy. Our four academies are:

In 2024 and 2025, we also offered the 鈥攁 tuition-free version of the World Class Kayak Academy鈥攕pecifically designed for Indigenous youth, in preparation for the first source-to-sea descent of the undammed Klamath River. Beginning in the 2026鈥2027 school year, we鈥檒l introduce our fifth program鈥!

World Class Academy

What do you consider when choosing academy destinations?

We operate our academies in some of the world鈥檚 most inspiring locations, setting WCA apart from other academic institutions. The athletic caliber of a destination is at the core of our school.

For mountain biking, we are looking for trails and MTB scenes that are considered to be the best in the world. We choose destinations that stand out as a global hot spot for the sport. Next, we review the environmental and cultural aspects of the destination. We look for places that are exciting and engaging places that our students are fired up on, with good local food and a variety of experiences beyond mountain biking. Finally, we examine logistics. The right accommodation is essential鈥攊t must support classrooms, morning workouts, nutritious meals, and storage for the massive amount of gear we bring along.

World Class Academy
World Class Academy recognizes that learning and passion must go hand in hand. (Photo: Ryan Lucas)

Before finalizing a location, I always consider how it fits within the broader itinerary for the school year. I ask myself: How does this destination balance with the others? Does it make sense in the context of where else we鈥檙e going? I want the yearlong itinerary to have a balance. I prefer to mix in classic WCA destinations like Whistler and Queenstown with more niche locales like Peru and Tasmania. Many factors go into choosing a location for WCA, but seeing it all come together鈥攁nd watching students be blown away by a place鈥攊s one of the most rewarding parts of my role. The considerations I put into MTB destinations are reflected in our other academies, where the kayak, climb, and kite heads of schools are asking similar questions and putting together equally standout yearlong itineraries.

World-Class Education

Crista Wiles, WCA Dean of Students

Who are your students?

Crista Wiles: Students come to WCA to complete their high school education while traveling to participate in the sport they love鈥攁 dream-come-true opportunity. They have varying levels of athletic expertise, but they are all motivated to learn from their athletic heroes and teachers (which turns out to be a terrific motivator for academic performance), grow as global citizens, and challenge themselves in a dynamic and engaging environment. Whether they attend for a semester or their whole high school career, students in our program will explore the world, push their limits, and connect with peers who share similar interests.

What sets our student body apart is not just athletic skill but the rapid development of character. Students come to WCA eager to learn from our expert staff and pursue their individual goals. They leave with even more growth than they imagined: a deeper understanding of themselves and a clearer vision for how they want to engage with the world. Through personalized life skills lessons, hands-on experience, and the college seminar, students learn the college process, explore new interests, and envision their future. By the time they leave WCA, they鈥檙e not just prepared for the next step鈥攖hey’re ready for wherever life takes them next.

What personal growth do you witness in students as they move through the program?

For many students, this is their first extended time away from home, and that offers a powerful opportunity for personal growth. Students develop character through the day-to-day realities of group living, independently managing responsibilities, and adapting to new routines while traveling internationally. The unique structure of our academic program鈥攕mall class sizes, personalized instruction, and deeply invested teachers鈥攁llows students to grow in confidence and capability in the classroom.

Athletically, they are immersed in their sport in some of the most iconic destinations in the world, with consistent training and meaningful coaching that fuels progress. They learn how to contribute to a team, navigate conflict, and hold themselves accountable.

Beyond these areas, I see students begin to explore who they want to be in the world. They gain independence, empathy, and self-awareness. WCA isn鈥檛 just a school: It鈥檚 a launchpad for the kind of growth that stays with students long after they leave.

If you haven鈥檛 visited yet, chances are 鈥擟olorado鈥檚 quintessential mountain town鈥攊s high on your bucket list. Its walkable , cobblestone streets, and old-world Tyrolean alpine architecture add to its sweeping Rocky Mountain views.

But what keeps mountain-loving visitors coming back again and again? Unbeatable access to world-class hiking, biking, and a wide range of 鈥攁ll just steps from Vail Village and Lionshead.

To truly understand what makes Vail so special, you need insight from someone who lives it every day. That鈥檚 why we turned to , a longtime local and elite athlete. A 15-time XTERRA USA national champion, 2015 XTERRA world champion, five-time Fat Bike World Champion, six-time USSSA National Snowshoe champion, and Eco-Challenge Fiji competitor, Middaugh has explored his home as both an adventure-seeking athlete and a parent of three.

鈥淢y family and I moved to Vail in June of 2000, and we were immediately in awe of the Gore Range and the vibrant, active community,鈥 Middaugh recalls. 鈥淲e quickly fell in love with the summers鈥攕pending our weekends exploring the endless trails that wind through Vail and .鈥 It鈥檚 a sentiment he鈥檚 carried ever since. As Middaugh puts it, 鈥淵ou come for the winter, but you stay for the summer.鈥

We asked Middaugh to share a few of his favorite spots and tips for making the most of your time in Vail鈥攚hether you鈥檙e training like a pro or adventuring with the family.

国产吃瓜黑料: What are your favorite trails to run or hike when you’re training?听

Josiah Middaugh: I am a big fan of the North Trails, including , , and , and the , which is also a popular singletrack for . They are easily accessible from Vail, so it can be a short ride, or you can link some of the trails together and it can be a long adventure.

Where are the best places to ride?听

On the road bike, Vail Pass is a great go-to ride. Once you pass the gate, the road is free of cars for a nine-mile climb up to 10,600 feet. If you don鈥檛 want all that climbing, one option is to shuttle to the top and ride down. Renting a bike in Vail is easy, too鈥攋ust head to one of the many in the villages to get geared up.

After a solid training session, where do you like to refuel?听

Sometimes during or after a long ride, I will stop into the to visit Mountain Ration for a mocha and some grab-and-go food. My favorite burrito is the veggie breakfast burrito from .

Trail Runner and Musician Liz Derstine Aims for PCT Speed Record

Training for a long-distance trail objective is no small feat鈥攊t takes time, dedication, and a whole lot of grit. Now, imagine doing that while earning two master鈥檚 degrees, building a career as a pianist and composer, and maintaining a newsletter. Sound impossible? Not for athlete Liz Derstine. The trail-running powerhouse, professional musician, and writer is proving that it鈥檚 possible and can be done with passion, creativity, and a whole lot of heart.

With many speed records under her belt, including the Appalachian Trail (northbound/female/supported) and Vermont鈥檚 Long Trail (female/self-supported), Derstine鈥檚 been gearing up for her next big challenge: the overall self-supported FKT on the Pacific Crest Trail. The current women鈥檚 self-supported course record (60 days, 17 hours, and 12 minutes) was established in 2013 by Heather Anderson; Josh Perry set the men鈥檚 self-supported northbound record (55 days, 16 hours, and 54 minutes) in 2022. And while it鈥檚 a lofty goal, Derstine is looking forward to the setting, solitude, and time to reconnect with one of her favorite trails.

(Photo: Mike McMonagle)

国产吃瓜黑料: What inspired you to go after the self-supported FKT on the PCT?

Liz Derstine: I spent a lot of time on the PCT in Oregon before and after my northbound FKT on the Appalachian Trail. That journey was life-changing and a lot to come down from, both physically and emotionally. In the aftermath, the PCT became a refuge. It鈥檚 where I went on my first solo backpacking trip, learned how to pitch a tent, and began experimenting with carrying all my own gear while running and hiking long distances.

My AT hike was supported鈥擨 had help with resupplies at road crossings and a vehicle to sleep in each night. But the idea of hiking the PCT self-supported has been percolating for about five years. Taking on that challenge feels especially meaningful on the trail where I first fell in love with solo adventures.

Mountain Hardwear athlete Liz Derstine
(Photo: Mike McMonagle)

What do you enjoy the most about being self-supported?

I love the feeling of empowerment that comes from being self-sufficient. I love problem solving! I think being self-supported offers the most adaptability by the nature of carrying all my gear and typically several days’ worth of food, which gives me more flexibility on where to sleep or how far I want to go that day. There鈥檚 no one waiting at the next road crossing to get me whatever I need, so it鈥檚 on me to get creative and figure it out! I鈥檒l be carrying my and with me, which gives me the freedom to stop wherever makes the most sense鈥攚hether that鈥檚 after a long day or when conditions shift unexpectedly. Being able to rely on my own setup is a big part of what makes this style of adventure so appealing to me.

View this post on Instagram

How have you been training for your upcoming endeavor?听

Speaking of problem solving and getting creative鈥 I鈥檓 currently in my final semester of grad school in Boston, finishing a dual master鈥檚 in music degree in collaborative piano and composition. When I moved here in 2022, I situated myself near the Middlesex Fells Reservation, which has hundreds of miles of technical singletrack trail. So, even with most days spent in Cambridge at my school, I can still squeeze in trail runs from home. I鈥檝e also gotten creative with training by run-commuting to and from school with my loaded up with music books and a change of clothes. And sometimes, if I have a break between classes or rehearsals, I鈥檒l throw on my and sneak in a nice long run along the Charles. Balancing everything has been a challenge, but finding ways to train within a busy schedule has honestly been pretty great FKT training!

What layers are you planning to pack?

The PCT is very exposed鈥攚hether it鈥檚 the heat and sun of the Mojave Desert, the high passes of the Sierra that might still hold snow well into summer, or long burn areas where wildfires have wiped out tree cover. So, being prepared for the elements is key. My go-to everyday layer will be the . It鈥檚 lightweight, breathable, and offers great sun protection without overheating. It鈥檚 also stretchy and durable, which makes it ideal for wearing day after day on the trail. I鈥檒l also be carrying my for wind and rain protection and the ultralight and packable for extra warmth when I need it.

Any advice for hikers and runners interested in long-distance objectives?

If you鈥檙e new to long-distance hiking or running, try plugging into the community and inviting a friend along for the journey! I was really intimidated by backpacking at first: What gear do I need? Where do I camp? How do I even set up a tent? Starting with a buddy can make it all feel a lot more manageable (and fun). Many cities have local outing clubs, and trail systems often have organizations that offer resources, events, and volunteer opportunities鈥攍ike ALDHA and ALDHA West, Appalachian Mountain Club, Pacific Crest Trail Association, Green Mountain Club in Vermont, or the Mazamas in Portland. I worked my way up to solo backpacking and camping by first trying it out with friends. Having someone to learn alongside, laugh with, and sometimes commiserate together made all the difference.

Guy Harvey: My siblings and I grew up in Jamaica on a cattle farm, and our parents loved the outdoors, particularly fishing. From early on, we were snorkeling and fishing as much as possible during school holidays. My love for the ocean became my career in the early 1980s as I went on to complete a Ph.D. in fish biology and fisheries management. I was painting marine life at the same time. By 1985鈥攚ith a potential career as a marine wildlife artist鈥擨 left academia, and my hobby became my profession. In 1999, the team formed the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University, and for the last 26 years, we have been conducting research on sharks and rays, billfish, and tuna.

In what ways are you motivating others to understand the importance of ocean conservation?

The Guy Harvey Foundation (GHF) provides students, educators, and the general public with fun, engaging content that highlights the importance of our oceans and what needs to be done to conserve them. With a state-standardized marine science curriculum and resources for educators to utilize the lessons in their classroom, the GHF aims to 鈥淕et Kids Salty鈥, growing their understanding of and appreciation for our oceans. The GHF also produces informative and entertaining videos that give people a peek into the fascinating undersea world.

Through his artwork, scientific research, and numerous outreach programs, he has sparked a movement for ocean conservation, educating the public and inspiring others to take action. (Photo: XTRATUF)

What types of programs does the GHF support?

GHF advances ocean conservation through education and research programs by providing marine science educational materials, teacher development workshops, and conservation initiatives like the Guy Harvey Conservation Education Program. The GHF also funds cutting-edge marine research to support sustainable fisheries, protect marine biodiversity, and improve ocean conservation efforts. GHF collaborates with leading scientific institutions, including the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University, Stanford University, the Harte Research Institute, the Dolphinfish Research Program, and more well-established research partners to conduct studies on species like sharks, billfish, and other pelagic species.

Lastly, the GHF partners with Florida Sea Grant to award scholarships to university students in Florida studying marine science, fostering the next generation of conservation leaders. To date, GHF has awarded $482,700 in scholarship funds to support the research of 98 students at 12 Florida universities.

, an avid traveler and journalist, took her first group trip with G 国产吃瓜黑料s to Peru in 2022. As an experienced solo traveler, Lipkin found herself drawn to G 国产吃瓜黑料s because of the way it opened up new opportunities for authentic community immersion and building lasting relationships through travel and adventure. Since then, Lipkin has been on six trips with G 国产吃瓜黑料s, gaining a wealth of experience that she now shares to inspire other women travelers.

国产吃瓜黑料: What impact has travel had on your life?

Tabitha Lipkin: When I was 11, I had the incredible opportunity to leave my small town of Texarkana, Texas, and travel to Barcelona, Spain. The experience completely blew my mind. I tried new foods, marveled at breathtaking landscapes, and even made a few friends who didn鈥檛 speak the same language as me. That trip sparked my passion for journalism, fueling my desire to share stories about incredible people and the wonders of our planet.

As a solo female traveler, joining small-group tours gives me the chance to connect with locals and fellow travelers while experiencing new places. This kind of intimate travel has opened my eyes to how much more alike we all are than we are different.

Travel has been transformative for me鈥攊t鈥檚 not just about the places I鈥檝e visited, but the people I鈥檝e met and the lessons I鈥檝e learned along the way.

How does traveling with a supportive community enable women to explore the world with confidence?听

Women know what it鈥檚 like and what it means to have a bit of hesitation when exploring new places alone. There鈥檚 vulnerability that comes with traveling solo, which is why we often seek out supportive communities.

As a solo female traveler, joining a group tour with G 国产吃瓜黑料s is a total game-changer. It gives you access to hidden gems recommended by locals while also offering the chance to make new friends along the way. The intimate experience of having a local CEO (Chief Experience Officer)鈥攁n expert guide who knows the area inside and out鈥攁dds another layer of confidence and empowerment. This kind of guidance allows women to explore the world unhindered, making travel feel both enriching and safe.

G 国产吃瓜黑料s has to fit every traveler. Some of its most popular include Classic, Active, Marine, Geluxe (its recently launched collection of premium active adventures), and鈥攏ew for 2025鈥擲olo-ish, designed for solo travelers who still want connection. (Photo: Tabitha Lipkin)

I traveled on the eight-day during a time of political unrest in the country. Despite the uncertainty, I never felt uneasy or worried because our incredible CEO kept us well-informed throughout the entire trip. She made sure we didn鈥檛 just skim the surface of the tourist hot spots but also embraced the realities of life in Ecuador. We had the opportunity to explore both the popular attractions and the country鈥檚 hidden gems, like what it truly means to live and work in a village in the Amazon rainforest.

How does traveling with G 国产吃瓜黑料s empower women in the communities you visit?听

I had never experienced community-based tourism until I traveled with G 国产吃瓜黑料s. Nearly half of its around the world incorporate , made possible through the company鈥檚 partnership with , a nonprofit that connects social enterprises with the tourism industry. This collaboration supports and scales meaningful community projects, many of which directly benefit and empower women. As travelers, we get the unique opportunity to experience these initiatives firsthand, gaining a deeper understanding of the communities we visit and the positive impact we can have.

A great example is the Women鈥檚 Weaving Coop, which is visited by dozens of . You get the chance to learn about traditional weaving techniques while directly supporting the local community. , available on trip pages on the website, shows travelers the percentage of money that stays within the host communities.

Another project that stands out to me is , the world鈥檚 first and only caf茅 run by survivors of acid attacks. These women, once shunned by their communities, now have a platform to rebuild their lives through community tourism. By supporting the caf茅 and purchasing handmade goods, travelers directly contribute to the women鈥檚 professional development and educational opportunities.

What has been one of your most memorable small-group travel experiences?

The was by far my most unforgettable trip. It was unbelievably beautiful in ways words can鈥檛 capture. I spent 11 days off-grid, hiking over 100 miles with a group that became lifelong friends.

Bonus: The Everest Base Camp Trek has a Ripple Score of 100 percent, meaning every dollar you spend stays in the local community. Check out my video below to see the journey.

Do you have any advice for women who are interested in travel but nervous to start?

Start small! There are so many amazing trips you can take just an hour or two outside your community, whether for a day or a weekend. From there, you can gradually build up to trips that require a flight.

When you鈥檙e ready to board a plane, two of my favorite G 国产吃瓜黑料s trips to start with are (where you get to stay on Isla Floreana) and the .

One adventurer鈥檚 solo journey across the U.S. on an Aventon Level 2 e-bike embraces the art of slow travel

Coast to Coast on Two Wheels

When a Reddit thread surfaced about a man who went on a solo cross-country e-bike tour, two questions demanded answers: Who was this adventurer, and what kind of bike did they use? After all, while reliable e-bikes have proliferated on urban commutes and mountain bike trails, only the best can successfully endure a grueling 5,500-mile journey from coast to coast.

The cyclist was 55-year-old Ed Ditto from Tennessee, and he was riding an .

Cruising across the country on an e-bike wasn鈥檛 Ditto鈥檚 first encounter with long-distance routes. He grew up backpacking with his father and even completed a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2023, and for years has been passionate about immersive travel. And he鈥檚 done a lot of it. Ditto retired early鈥攁t age 36鈥攆reeing up time to pursue his love of whitewater kayaking, ultrarunning, and exploring new places without the pressure of time.

Ditto鈥檚 Aventon-powered journey began at the Yorktown Victory Monument in Virginia and concluded at the Astoria Column in Oregon. Along the way, he connected the dots between urban centers like Chattanooga and St. Louis and scenic highlights like Yellowstone National Park and Breckenridge. The route offered sweeping views of the Mississippi River, climbs over Rocky Mountain passes, and a front-row seat to the diverse landscapes of the American heartland.

Ditto put his Aventon Level 2 to work on a grueling 5,500-mile tour across the United States. (Photo: Ed Ditto)

Choosing a bike for the journey was just as important as choosing the route. Ditto says the decision was influenced by positive feedback from the community. 鈥淚t was good review after good review鈥攂oth in the trade press and from individual owners across various forums,鈥 he recalls. 鈥淚 found a local dealer, took the Aventon Level 2 for a test ride, and it just felt right. I鈥檇 tried other bikes, but this one stood out as the best option. Plus, it seemed versatile enough to handle more than just urban commuting.鈥

He upgraded the e-bike with essentials to help meet the challenges of a continent-spanning ride. The kit enhancements included:

  • Swapping the stock 12-32T 8-speed cassette for an 11-46T 9-speed for better climbing gears. This also meant upgrading the shifter and rear derailleur and lengthening the chain.
  • Purchasing two extra batteries and a spare charger.
  • Installing a custom Old Man Mountain front through-axle with an integrated attachment point for a front rack.
  • Switching to Schwalbe Marathon E Plus 2.00 tires for added durability.

The package successfully got Ditto across the country, collecting memories, views, and interactions he鈥檒l carry with him for a lifetime. He recalls the final moments of his trip:

鈥淥n the last day of my trip, after five months riding westward, I crested the ridge above Cape Lookout, Oregon, pulled off at an overlook, and saw the Pacific breaking against the beach. I realized I鈥檇 made it. I stood there straddling my bike, balancing its weight, and trying to feel anything like triumph. But I only remember feeling exhausted.

鈥淭here were other people there, all watching the ocean, except for one guy. He came over and asked how far I鈥檇 ridden, and when I told him I鈥檇 crossed the country, he did what you鈥檇 expect: He gasped, said 鈥榃ow,鈥 congratulated me, asked a bunch of questions, etc.

鈥淭his had happened to me dozens and dozens of times as I made my way across the U.S.鈥攁ll these people who were flabbergasted that you could walk out of your house, get on your bike, and just start riding. A hundred, 500, 5,000 miles鈥攁mazing, they鈥檇 say.

鈥淎nd then another guy approached and reacted like the first, and then a family walked up. I suddenly found myself surrounded by people praising me, telling me what an extraordinary guy I was for doing such a thing.

鈥淚t freaked me out a little. I鈥檇 been alone way too long by then, maybe gotten a touch agoraphobic. So I disentangled myself in the nicest way possible, rode down the ridge to the beach, leaned my bike against a fir tree, and walked out into the ocean with all my clothes on. That was it. Virginia to Oregon. Coast to coast. Done.

鈥淎 few days later, after recuperating at a beachside AirBnB near Astoria, I rented a van, loaded my bike, and headed back east. Eventually, I stopped for gas and caffeine. Unhooking the nozzle from the pump, it hit me: Back to the world of the mundane, man.

鈥淢aybe I should鈥檝e ridden home.鈥
