It depends on how you define love. But while we may never know exactly what is going on in an animal鈥檚 head (or heart), strong evidence suggests they do indeed fall in love.

Do Animals Feel Love?

There is 鈥渁bsolutely no doubt that animals love,鈥 says Marc Bekoff, professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and author of . What makes him so sure? Years of observing wolves, coyotes and other animals in their natural habitats.

鈥淎 long-term close relationship, commitment to another person,鈥 Bekoff says. 鈥淵ou travel with them, you defend territory and food, you have a family, you miss one another while you鈥檙e apart.鈥

That loving behavior he observed is supported by an experiment detailed in a recent article in The Atlantic, 鈥.鈥 In the experiment, Director of the Center for Neuroeconomics Studies at Claremont Graduate University collected blood samples from a dog and a goat after they played with one another. He then measured the animals鈥 levels of oxytocin, or 鈥渢he neurochemical of love.鈥

The dog had a 48 percent increase in oxytocin, meaning it viewed the goat as a friend. The goat, however, was enraptured. 鈥淚t had a 210 percent increase in oxytocin,鈥 Zak explains. 鈥淎t that level of increase, within the framework of oxytocin as the 鈥榣ove hormone,鈥 we essentially found that the goat might have been in love with the dog.鈥

And what of those animals that pair up for life, such as certain types of birds? Although penguins don't mate for life, they can sustain long-term relationships, says Dee Boersma, the cirector of the Magellanic Penguin Project at the University of Washington. One pair she observed was together for 16 years.

Boersma鈥檚 Ph.D. student Jeffrey Smith studies why female penguins, given the choice, will pick one male as her mate over another, but they have yet to pinpoint a reason. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not sure if it鈥檚 a behavioral thing or if she sees a nest that she likes,鈥 he says. Could this X factor be love?聽

Boersma cites a story of seeming heartbreak among Galapagos penguins. When a male penguin disappeared, his mate remained in the nest waiting for him. Even when another male lured her away, she continued to return to the old nest.

鈥淲as she pining away for her love?鈥 Boersma asks. 鈥淪he was distressed but was it love? With a bird brain is it the same as human love?鈥 Perhaps not, but that doesn鈥檛 necessarily make it any less like love, just different.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not to say that dog love is the same as human love,鈥 says Bekoff, 鈥渂ut your love might not be the same as mine.鈥

It's not just bad for morale鈥攅ven mild amounts of anxiety can physically wear you down over time, and your performance suffers for it.

Stress and the Athlete's Body

You鈥檙e lying in bed, and you suddenly start worrying. It could be about anything. Or nothing. Maybe it鈥檚 just a sinking feeling in your chest, with no thoughts at all鈥攗ntil that old, familiar darkness descends, beckoning the doubts back in again. Then your heart rate quickens as your mind whirs with worst-case scenarios. Tightness creeps into your neck and shoulders, but you鈥檙e too busy worrying to notice.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults, according to the . While stressing doesn鈥檛 necessarily make you diagnosable, it does mean you鈥檙e anxious, probably tired, and possibly less likely to be at your physical best. In addition, we often don鈥檛 realize the extent to which everyday stress can compromise performance.聽

鈥淥ur self-awareness as individuals is incredibly poor,鈥 says , a sports psychologist and Boston University professor. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a reason you鈥檙e exhausted.鈥

Even if you don鈥檛 recognize its physical manifestations, your anxiety is burning up energy stores and motivation levels you could be using to train. When your brain detects and responds to a threat, it leads to the release of adrenaline, says psychologist Richard Zinbarg, who heads up Northwestern University鈥檚 . In the short term, this gives the body a boost of strength and energy. But when it persists, it leaves the body drained. While the exact impact varies from person to person and is difficult to quantify, the effect is major.

鈥淟ike a car engine that revs into the red for too long, it will break down over time,鈥 sports psychologist and performance coach says. 鈥淥ur bodies start to show the wear and tear of chronic stress.鈥

The solution? Diagnosed anxiety disorders are best treated by a medical professional. But for the rest of us, the first step is awareness. Naylor recommends doing a 鈥渟houlder check鈥 throughout the day. If they鈥檙e tense, take a deep breath to release the strain.聽

Smith suggests deep breathing鈥攊nhale slowly through the nose and exhale out through the mouth. This self-conscious breathing will bring you back to the moment.

Stress management is difficult because we live in a fast-paced society, but many coping mechanisms are fairly simple. It鈥檚 about 鈥渞ealizing that we have these skills, but aren鈥檛 using them when we most need them,鈥 Naylor says.聽

While some level of stress is good for performance鈥攖hat boost of adrenaline can make you faster on race day鈥斺渆xcessive anxiety is not one bit helpful,鈥 advises Naylor. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e focused enough, you鈥檙e focused enough. There鈥檚 a tipping point.鈥
