The Route: An active twist on the classic sailing trip via Turkish gullet: From the wooden “mother ship,” eight sea kayaks make daily forays. You’ll paddle 15 days and 60 miles from the fishing village of Kalkan to Phaselis, where Alexander the Great wintered while capturing ancient Termessos.
When to go: May-June, September-October
Difficulty: Moderate
Travel advisory: If you travel in twos, pick your roommate well; quarters and beds are tiny by landlubbers’ standards, although you can always sleep out on deck under the stars.
High/low points:
- Peering down through vodka-clear water at the stone lions’ heads adorning the third-century B.C. Lycean tombs sunken off Simena.
- Negotiating the weak flow and sketchy footholds of the head’s curtainless “marine shower.”
