Q: What is the current situation as far as rock climbing on the coasts of Thailand?

A: According to Joe Cummings, author of Lonely Planet’s Travel Survival Kit to Thailand, the hot spot for climbers these days is Krabi, on the coast of southern Thailand. With its spectacular cliffs rising straight out of the Andaman Sea, downright cheap accommodations, and several year-round climbing schools in
the area, it’s no wonder this place is a climber’s mecca.

Getting there means flying into Phuket and then taking a bus or taxi to Krabi; or, opt for the more scenic route and hop a southbound train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, an easy bus or cab ride from Krabi. Either way, you’ll need to catch one of the several boats that make daily runs from Krabi out to the cliffs and nearby hotels. At night, shack up with all the real
climbers at the Ya-Ya Guesthouse, where a bunk room will run you a mere $8 per night. For something a little more upscale, try the Rayavadee-Dusit Hotel, also below the cliffs; unlike the Ya-Ya, Dusit does have a phone number, so you can call ahead to their Bangkok office for reservations (02-238-0032).
