The Route: A weeklong stay at a tiny solar-powered beach resort in Galibi Nature Reserve, one of the world’s largest turtle nesting grounds. You’ll have front-row seats for the parade of leatherback, green, and giant olive ridley turtles laying their eggs in the sand.
When to go: March through July
Difficulty: Easy
Travel advisory: Perfect for insomniacs: Since turtles lay their eggs only at night, volunteers work two-hour shifts between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. That’s in addition to daytime chores like monitoring nest temperatures.
High/low points:
- Playing the hero as you shoo dozens of hungry birds away from new hatchlings inching down the beach to begin their ocean odyssey.
- Fending off repellent-impervious mosquitoes that swarm your beach-front lodge room on windless nights.
