Snowboarding: This Isn’t Baseball
By Todd Balf

With two rival race circuits splitting up the best international talent, several American riders, led by former world champion Mike Jacoby, were happy to devour the inaugural Grundig Snowboard World Cup tour, put on by the FIS, skiing’s organizing body. On January 13, Jacoby won his second giant slalom of the season, at Les Deux Alpes, France, and took the overall lead in the
FIS slalom standings the next weekend at San Candido, in northern Italy. The season’s first half-pipe event was also held at San Candido, but it wasn’t much to look at. Several European stars boycotted the event, fearful that they’d be fined or banned from competing in events sponsored by the International Snowboard Federation, the organizing body for the sport’s other race
circuit. San Candido was yet another casualty in what threatens to be a messy tussle for the sport’s future.
