Skiing the slope at Elmendorf Base, Alaska
Question: I understand there is a ski hill on Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. I want to get in a couple of hours of skiing either Thursday night or Friday morning before I head down the AlCan back to the Lower 48. Can you please provide some information regarding the type of ski slope, cost, and operating hours?

国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: The slope at Elmendorf is just that: a slope. According to one officer, it takes three minutes to ride the chairlift up and one minute to ski down.

But it’s right on the base and couldn’t be more convenient for people who want to take just a few turns. Plus, this time of year in Alaska it stays light outside until almost 7 p.m. and daylight extends by six minutes every day.

Though the hill is pretty small 鈥 there’s only a bunny hill with a rope tow, a t-bar, and a chairlift 鈥 it offers several full-service amenities, including a half-pipe and snowboard park, a sliding hill, ski rental for $10 per day (half-price after 5 p.m.), and snowboard rental for $15 per day (half-price after 5 p.m.).

On Thursdays, the hill is open from 3 to 9 p.m., on Fridays, 1 to 9 p.m. The ski area is closed Monday and Tuesday. A lift ticket costs $10 for a full day and $5 after 5 p.m. Call 907-552-4838 for more information.
