Renting a house in the tropics Question: I want the impossible: a house to rent for the week between Christmas and New Year’s. It should be somewhere hot and gorgeous with a lot to do, preferably hiking and biking or diving. I am turning 30 that week and work like a dog. I am desperate to get out of this town 鈥 which gets nasty on the holidays 鈥 and was hoping to lure my friends by getting a house somewhere. Is there anywhere we’d be able to fly to? Meredith Davis
国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: I have four choices for you, all of which are superbly situated and will provide you with the NYC detox it sounds like you desperately need. The first is on the Big Island in Hawaii. It sits on its own private white-sand beach on Wailea Bay in the upscale Kohala district. It is one story with three bedrooms and an additional “treehouse” room attached by a separate entrance. The price per week is $4,200 plus tax, and it houses three to four couples. For an additional charge you can get maid service, have your grocery shopping done for you, or hire a masseuse who makes house calls. Call Hawaii Vacation Rentals (808-882-7000) for more details. Next is the Kauikeolani Estate on Kauai, Hawaii. The 100-year-old beachfront plantation house is on Hanalei Bay in the rural north end of Kauai. It has seven bedrooms and six bathrooms and was once graced by the presence of Bette Midler. The best part, however, is that it has a whole closet stacked with kayaks and boogie boards. The house costs $5,000 per week and fits six couples. Call the Hanalei Land Company (808-826-1454) for more details. A bit closer to home, you could try Clifton Cottage on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. The setup includes a two-bedroom main house plus a separate one-bedroom guest cottage at the north end of Harbour Island’s pink-sand beach. The house sleeps eight and costs $3,000 per week. Call Geraldine Albury at Island Real Estate, 242-333-2278. If bucks are no object, try villa #55 at the Half Moon Golf, Beach, and Tennis Club at Montego Bay, Jamaica. The whitewashed villa has five bedrooms with a small garden, interior courtyard, and swimming pool. The villa sleeps five couples and costs a whopping $1,650 per night, which includes a butler, cook, and maid on call 24 hours of the day, not to mention the use of the amazing facilities at Half Moon. Call 800-626-0592 for details. |
