Packing List: Seaworthy Extras You won’t forget waterproof SPF-15 sunscreen on your next water weekend, but what about . . . Quick-dry long-sleeve shirt and pants. Light, cool, fast-drying clothes that cover the arms and legs are surprisingly hard to find. Try the Ex Officio Baja shirt from Travelsmith ($70; 800-950-1600) and Rail Riders Weatherpants from West Marine ($69; 800-538-0775). Dry bags. Ricksacks from Northwest River Supply (800-635-5202) are nearly transparent, a boon for the organizationally challenged. Five sizes range in price from $11 to $25. Waterproof waist pouch. Take your valuables into the drink in the five-by-seven-inch Water Pocket from Watersafe ($13; 800-355-1126). Sun hat. A baseball cap won’t protect you from intense UV rays reflected off the water. Good alternatives are the Ultimate Cap from Ultimate Products ($30; 800-477-4287), with a flap that covers the neck, and the double-brimmed Aloft mesh cap from Pearl Izumi ($15; 800-877-7080). Polarized sunglasses. If you’re reading raoids or tracking trout, polarized lenses cut surface glare. Aqua Vision glasses from Bass Pro (800-227-7776) are a bargain, but not a fashion statement, at $15. |
