Overnight camping trips on horseback Question: I am interested in horseback-riding overnight trips. Do you have any information about a few of them? Kathie Mahoney

Culling the most popular itineraries from both companies, Equitour FITS offers everything from a Queensland horse trek in Australia to an Andean mountain ride in Ecuador to a Pony Express ride in Wyoming, all of which are designed with either advanced, strong intermediate, or intermediate riders in mind. Most of their trips are a riding holiday where you will be on the move, camping out or staying at inns every night and exploring the countryside during the day. They also have a stationary program, which allows you to base out of a riding facility then choose from trail rides, instruction, or other non-horse-related activities during the day. Lastly, Equitour FITS offers instructional programs in the United States and Europe, where you can bone up on your horseback-riding skills in intensive classes. Trip prices generally start at $1,200, but call Equitour FITS (800-545-0019 or 307-455-3363) for their brochure. If you don’t have the time, money, or inclination for a weeklong trip, there are a number of horseback-riding stables scattered throughout the West, which offer overnight trips. Choose the location you are most interested in visiting and then call the area’s chamber of commerce to find specific horseback-riding information. Don Donnelly Stables (800-346-4403) in Gold Canyon, Arizona, offers the typical dusty package where you’ll ride the Arizona desert and alpine terrain by day and sing around a campfire and sleep under the stars by night. Their overnight trip costs $132.50 and includes camping equipment, horses, and food. |
