It鈥檚聽a question as old as air travel itself: aisle or window seat? Over the years, it鈥檚 been the cause of many social-media 聽and flying elbows in Southwest鈥檚 first-come, first-choice聽boarding queues. And while numerous polls have tried to settle the issue, they鈥檝e led to little clarification聽(this聽聽from British travel company Thomas Cook Airlines said聽that聽61 percent prefer聽the aisle,聽聽survey insisted that the choice depends on how often you fly, and yet 聽saw聽the two seats聽tied).

As a first step, we consulted airlines to get our hands on some facts, but they were鈥攗nsurprisingly鈥攃agey. What they did confirm is that people are willing to pay for their preferred seats, and they know it: choosing where you sit will cost you about $30 extra on most flights.聽

With information on lockdown, we turned to travel experts鈥攁.k.a. Twitter followers and travel-savvy editors鈥攖o weigh in, igniting a storm of comments and office debate. Aisle took a comfortable, though not decisive, lead among our , garnering 42 percent of votes versus windows鈥 36 percent, while 22 percent copped out with 鈥渋t depends.鈥 (A lone contrarian , 鈥淣o option for the middle?鈥 And while a middle-seat might soon make that聽a legitimate option, we refused to dignify that question with a response.)聽

In the end, there was no definitive answer to air travel鈥檚 version of musical chairs. The airline reps we talked to not so subtly聽suggested upgrading to business class, and another聽reader recommended, 鈥淛ust buy two seats, people.鈥 Though聽if聽you have that sort of cash to burn, you might as well check out on Aircraft Exchange. If not, consult our聽guide to decide, below, on聽whether to ride the glass or the aisle聽on your next trip.聽

How Long Is the Flight?

Point: Assistant travel editor Kaelyn Lynch was once trapped against the window by a 鈥済igantic rugby player鈥 during a 14-hour flight from New York to聽South Africa. 鈥淚f I fall asleep, slap me,鈥 he told her, then proceeded to drink six mini bottles of聽wine and pass out. She shook him, but he kept snoozing, leaving her unable to move about the cabin for the duration of her flight. When she got off the plane, her legs were so full of fluid from the lack of movement (a phenomenon called peripheral edema) that聽she could barely walk.

Conclusion: If the flight鈥檚 long enough to cause a blood clot, you might want to make sure there鈥檚 no chance of obstruction.

Are You Assertive?

Point: 鈥淗ave you ever been in the window seat on a seven-hour international flight, when everyone else in your row is sleeping and you have to go,聽but you don鈥檛 want to be the jerk who聽wakes everyone up because, lord knows, it鈥檚 hard enough to fall asleep on an airplane?鈥澛Ariella Ginztler, associate聽gear editor

Counterpoint:

Conclusion: If you鈥檙e on a flight longer than a few hours or have weak bladder control,聽you鈥檇 better be fierce or in the aisle seat.

Will You Get a View?

笔辞颈苍迟:听

Conclusion: If you鈥檙e flying into a scenic ,聽over a continent in daylight, or even above the ocean around sunrise,聽you鈥檙e seriously missing out if you鈥檙e sitting by聽the aisle.聽聽

Are You Really Excited to Get to Your Destination Five Minutes Faster?

Point: 鈥淚鈥檓 one of those people that just runs past everybody, so I always opt for the aisle.鈥濃擩enny Earnest, audience development director

(Slightly more alarming) point:

Conclusion:聽If you鈥檝e got a short layover or are a nervous flyer,聽go with the aisle.聽

Can You Sleep on a Plane?

Point: 鈥淥bviously, window.聽Why is this even up for discussion? In the aisle, there鈥檚 nowhere to put your head except on someone else鈥檚聽shoulder.鈥 鈥擡rin Berger, senior culture editor

颁辞耻苍迟别谤辫辞颈苍迟:听On the same flight to聽South Africa she spent trapped against the window, assistant travel editor Kaelyn Lynch figured she鈥檇 at least have somewhere to lean her head to sleep. But聽she soon discovered that聽the distance聽between the seat and plane wall was farther than that of the smaller domestic planes聽she was used to. A pillow and balled-up sweatshirt simply fell into the gap, leaving her with a sore neck and not a second聽of sleep until she collapsed into bed in Cape Town. She聽hasn鈥檛 chosen a window seat on an international flight since.聽

Conclusion: The distance between the seat聽and the聽window聽varies by model, according to Mark B. Dowty, director of business development and engineering for seat manufacturer Collins Aerospace. We recommend looking up a blueprint for your aluminum bird and deciding聽accordingly. Either way, it鈥檚 probably time to invest in a neck pillow.聽

How Long Are Your Legs?

Point: 鈥淚鈥檓 tall, so always the aisle.鈥 鈥擫uke Whelan, research editor

Counterpoint: 鈥淵our head gets bonked!鈥 鈥擡.B.

Counterpoint: 鈥淥h yeah, and I鈥檝e had many bruises from the beverage cart.鈥濃擫.W.

Conclusion: There鈥檚 no winning if you鈥檙e tall. This time, the shorties take the day.

Ultimately, the truth is that when traveling to a new and exciting destination, you really can鈥檛 go wrong. As David Haskell, who we once described as a real-life Lorax (a character fond of air travel), put it:聽
