Mountain biking in San Miguel, Mexico Question: My husband and I are avid mountain bikers. We are planning a trip to Mexico in January and are looking for a resort that is near lots of trails. We plan to bring our own bikes and, though we’re open to other activities, it seems everyone is pushing kayaking this year! Can you help? P.S. We have one week and are willing to consider other countries or places that are warm in the winter and not too expensive. Thanks! Melyssa Davis 国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: Most people travel to San Miguel de Allende, 150 miles northwest of Mexico City, for its thriving art scene, but it also happens to be the hottest mountain-biking destination in Mexico with 800-plus miles of varied terrain, a slew of local and foreign bikers, and almost a dozen mountain-bike shops. A typical trail rollercoasters through ranchland dotted with centuries-old churches, then climbs into rocky, high desertland filled with mesquite and cholla. San Miguel is more than a mile high, so be prepared for altitude troubles, as well as a few flats due to the rough terrain. La Puertecita Boutique Hotel’s Trek-Mex excursions offer bilingual mountain-bike guides/coaches, fully equipped front-suspension mountain bikes, helmets, breakfast and lunch, and local transportation. The hotel itself lies at the center of the colonial city with two heated pools, a Jacuzzi, water luge, fitness area, and suites with private patios and fireplaces. For more |
