In the Lapland of Luxury…

Ever want to get out of town for a while . . . and just chill? In Sweden’s northern town of Jukkasjärvi, the finishing touches are being put on the world’s largest igloo–a 3,000-ton snow-and-ice structure designed to house a 40-guest hotel, an art gallery, a cinema, and a 45-foot bar made of solid ice (no need to request a frosted mug). This is the fourth year the ice
hotel has been erected, and new this season is an oxymoronic “ice sauna,” an outdoor “snow tub” that’s warmed by sauna heaters.

The temperature inside hovers around 30 degrees Fahrenheit; guests sleep comfortably in down bags on reindeer-skin-covered slabs of ice. Dog-sledding, nordic skiing, and kicksledding (on a scooterlike sled) help visitors fill the few hours of Lapland daylight. The igloo opens around December 1 and closes (read melts) sometime after Easter. Package prices start at $283 per
