Inns & Lodges: Nereledge Inn, New Hampshire

After a long day of feeling the burn on the Classic Rock of New Hampshire’s Cathedral Ledge, sometimes the last thing you’re in the mood for is sleeping on the ground. Fortunately, just down the road at the Nereledge Inn you can enjoy a comfortable room, a huge country breakfast, and the White Horse Pub, a friendly place to swap tales about the crux moves while sampling a free
pint of the owner’s home brew, Wolf Tail Ale.

The Nereledge, built in 1787, is only a few minutes’ walk from the North Conway village center. Owned by Valerie and David Halpin for the past 12 years, the house has served as an inn for most of this century. One of the two sitting rooms has a large wood stove and an inspirational view of Cathedral Ledge and the rest of the Moat Mountains. The 11 guest rooms are decorated with
antique furniture in eclectic styles, with a touch of Europe in the eiderdown comforters.

Some of the best rock climbing in the Northeast can be found a few miles away at Cathedral and White Horse Ledges. Gear can be rented at Eastern Mountain Sports (603-356-5433) and International Mountain Equipment (603-356-7064), both of which are around the corner from the inn. While you’re in either shop, pick up a copy of Ed Webster’s Rock Climbs in
the White Mountains of New Hampshire ($29), the best guide to the area.

You can also pedal right from the Nereledge to 30 miles of mountain-bike trails on the west side of Mount Washington Valley. David Halpin, a mountain biker himself, will point you in the right direction.

Nereledge Inn is on River Road in North Conway, about 60 miles from Portland, Maine. Rooms cost $59-$89 for a double, including breakfast, and a two-night minimum is required most weekends, in foliage season, and during holiday periods. Call 603-356-2831 for reservations.
