Watch 1,500 buffed competitors swim, bike, and run their way through 12,500 gallons of water and 2,000 bottles of sunscreen at the 20th Ironman Triathlon World Championships on the Big Island. The race starts at 7 a.m., and the fastest man crosses the finish line on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona in under eight and a half hours. Call 808-329-0063 for information.
November 16-December 20:
The largest swells this side of Mars make an appearance on Oahu’s North Shore during the Red Dog Triple Crown of Surfing. March 1-2:
Flying a kite takes on epic proportions at the 14th annual Hawaii Challenge International Sportkite Championships. Competitors from around the globe will perform aerial ballet and power manuevers that will get kites whistling at up to 60 mph. Wind permitting, the fun starts at 10 a.m. at Queen Kapiolani Park in Honolulu. For details call 922-5483.
