Day-tripping with Bear Run as your base Question: Where is Bear Run Nature Preserve near the Yough? We are going whitewater rafting and climbing and we would like to camp cheaply. Gregory Kett 国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: Bear Run is a stone’s throw (almost) from the Yough, making it an ideal–and cheap–base camp for day trips in the area. A half-dozen or so free campsites are spread along a network of hiking trails that criss-crosses the pine- and oak-forested plateau overlooking Bear Run. The closest tent site to the parking area is about a half-mile in; for easy access to Bear Run, set your sights on site #4. When you’re not braving high water and roiling rapids on the Yough, consider biking the trails in the adjacent Ohiopyle State Park; the 17-mile hardpack trail along the Yough is especially scenic. If you don’t have room to bring your bikes, Wilderness Voyageurs (800-272-4141) in nearby Ohiopyle will rent you fat-tire steeds for about $15 per day. To get there, take Exit 9 off I-70 and take Pennsylvania 31 and 381 south about 22 miles to the parking area at Bear Run Center.
