Canadian adventure, minus the boys
Question: I am curious if you know of any travel or tour companies that cater to women only in Canada? I’m interested in hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and downhill skiing. I could also be tempted by more adventurous or extreme trips. I have heard of a company called “Call of the Wild” and it seems like the kind of company I’d be
interested in going with. But do they or anyone else operate in Canada? Thanks.

国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: Outward Bound’s Western Canada school has two women-only mountaineering courses on the schedule for 1997. Both the June and September courses will be held in British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, north of Whistler, with an emphasis on backpacking, technical rock climbing, and day hiking. The nine-day skill trips cost $1,345
(Canadian) per person, and financial aid is available. For more details call 604-737-3093.

Outward Bound Ontario also offers three women’s courses in the wilderness north of Thunder Bay that focus on rock climbing, solo navigation, sea kayaking, and canoeing. Trips run June through September and range in price from $825 to $995 (U.S.). Call 888-688-9273.

Another option is Woodswoman’s two-week Canadian Wilds Canoeing trip through Ontario’s Quetico Provincial Park and Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. You don’t need previous paddling experience, just a tolerance for sore shoulders (five to eight miles a day is standard), the occasional portage, and plenty of fresh air and solitude. Trip dates for 1997 are
August 3-16 and cost is $995 per person. Accommodations, of course, are backwoods rustic–tents, sleeping bags, pit toilets. For details, call 612-822-3809.

For an even greater open-water paddling challenge, sign on with Women in the Wilderness’s two-week canoe trip through Pukaswa National Park on Lake Superior. This year’s trip is scheduled for late June, before the swells get too big, and costs about $1,200 per person (612-227-2284). As for skiing, 国产吃瓜黑料 Travel for Women can hook you up with a seven-day backcountry ski
trip in and around Banff, departing February 18 for $750 per person. Call 541-386-2111.
