Bring on Atlanta

Canada’s Alison Sydor opened the 1996 mountain-biking season true to last year’s form. She won her second-straight Cactus Cup stage race in March outside Scottsdale, Arizona, thus quickly answering the question of how she was coping with life as the gold-medal favorite
for the coming Summer Olympics. “I’m really OK with it,” says Sydor, who flopped as a favorite in the road race in Barcelona. “Back in ’92 everybody was touting me, but I never really believed it. This time I do.” In the men’s field, Andreas Hestler made it a Canadian sweep, aggressively introducing himself to Olympic favorites Ned Overend and Tinker Juarez by taking two of four
stages en route to the overall title.
