Boundary Waters canoeing permits

Q: I have taken three trips up to the Boundary Waters and love it there. I understand the reason for them changing the number of people allowed on a permit to nine instead of 10, but I have a problem with the canoe limit of three. Is there a way to get a waiver or something so we could take four canoes, or is there another place as nice as the
Boundary Waters?

A: Good news–you don’t need a waiver or a new place to paddle. The Boundary Waters Wilderness Area currently has a four-canoe, nine-person, two-week limit. Apparently, rangers were considering allowing only three canoes per group, but they upped
it to four in order to match permit regulations in neighboring Quetico Provincial Park. For more information, contact the Boundary Waters ranger station in Grand Marais at 218-387-2451, or for suggestions for paddling Quetico’s maze of remote wilderness lakes, contact the park service at 807-597-2735.
