The Route: An altitudinally schizophrenic nine- to 15-day paddling trip that starts on 12,500-foot Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, and puddle-jumps to the Mamore, a lowland river in the Amazon Basin. You’ll float amid freshwater dolphins and camp on islands that were sacred to the Inca.
When to go: Year-round
Difficulty: Moderate
Travel advisory: Certainly one of the few kayak trips in which altitude sickness can be a problem. Drink lots of water and try the local remedy: mate de coca (coca tea). If headaches and nausea persist, you’ll be glad you brought along the prescription drug Diamox.
High/low points:
- Getting buzzed on Lake Titicaca by a squadron of pink flamingos dozens strong.
- Watching a four-foot green snake drop into your boat from a overhanging branch along the Mamore.
