Bike-rental options on the Big Island Question: I need some info about bike rental on the Big Island. We are going there April 30th to May 11th. Can you give me some shop names? Anni O’Shea 国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: Of all the islands, Hawaii definitely ranks high for riding, thanks to the little-trafficked, well-paved roads–hence the annual influx of cyclists in October. For rentals, try Mauna Kea Mountain Bikes ($28 per day, 808-885-2091) in Waimea, on the Kohala Peninsula on the northwestern end of the Big Island. While you’re in the neighborhood, make the long, tough 3,000-foot climb out of town on the Kohala Mountain Road and pedal along a high ridge with panoramic views to the remote town of Hawi. Total there-and-back distance is a South of there in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Pedals Unlimited rents mountain bikes, with or without suspension, by the day or week. Weekly rates range from $70 for a rigid-fork Diamondback to $140 for a full-suspension get-up. Call 808-329-2294. Another good bet in Kailua is Dave’s Bike and Triathlon Shop (808-329-4522); their skinny-tire road bikes and rigid-fork mountain bikes go for $60 per week, or $15 per day. |
