Bicycle touring around Vermont
Question: My wife and I like to ride bikes. Is there any outfit in Vermont that caters specifically to biking? My wife likes to stay in B&Bs and I like to camp, so we could go either way. We would like a tour because we don’t like to haul our gear on our bikes.

国产吃瓜黑料 Adviser: There is no shortage of cycling tours in Vermont. In fact, the Green Mountain state, with its rolling mountains, vivid wildflowers, glacial lakes, and quaint architecture, is one of the most popular cycling destinations in the entire country.

The following is an incomplete list of cycling outfitters, but it will give you a good idea of what’s out there:

Peace of Mind Guaranteed Bike Tours of Vermont: If the name says it’s guaranteed, it must be guaranteed. This brand-new company offers weekend and five-day tours to all corners of Vermont from June through October.

Tenting in state parks is the usual accommodation, but on the five-day trips you’ll spend one night at an inn. Each tour offers at least two or three routes, ranging from 20 to 60 miles per day.

The tour leaders have been trained in the art of gourmet camp cuisine, so after a long day’s pedal, you can expect some good grub. Trip prices range from approximately $200 for the weekend tour and $600 for the five-day tour. For specific itineraries call 802-434-2270.

Backroads, a Berkeley, California-based company, offers a six-day inn trip to both the Northeast Kingdom and the Southern River Valley of Vermont.

The terrain for both trips consists of gently to moderately rolling hills with a few short climbs. Each night you’ll stay at selected bed-and-breakfasts in charming villages where you’ll have time to go antique shopping or dive into a good book back in your room.

The price for both trips is $1,495 and includes all meals except one lunch. Call Backroads at 800-462-2848 for details.

Bike the Light Fantastic adds a twist to its Vermont tour. Instead of cycling along the windy roads, you’ll be mountain biking through the Green Mountains on dirt roads.

You should be in good shape for this trip, considering you’ll be crossing the Green Mountains four times. The $1,400 inn-to-inn trip lasts 10 days and covers the length of the state. Call Bike the Light Fantastic at 802-257-2612 for details.

A few other companies to consider are Sierra Club Outings (415-977-5522) and Vermont Bicycle Touring (800-245-3686).
