Affordable skiing in Utah
Q: I am planning to take a skiing trip in January, but I don’t know where to go. I am a student, so I don’t have a big budget. Where could I go for some decent skiing without having to spend big bucks?

A: For copious amounts of snow and mind-boggling steeps at student-friendly prices, you can’t do much better than Alta Ski Resort in Utah. With more than 500 inches of supernaturally light powder setting into the head of Utah’s Little Cottonwood Canyon every
winter, there’s plenty of untracked fluff–and you won’t have to break the bank to find it: Alta lift tickets go for a mere $25 per day. Inexpensive accommodations are easy to come by in nearby Salt Lake City as long as you’re game for a 45-minute, $4 bus ride; UTA shuttles connect Alta to more than 50 downtown Salt Lake lodgings several times a day. For really cheap digs, try
the Ute Hostel at 21 East Kelsey Avenue, where a bed will cost you $13 per night and airport pick-ups are free (801-363-8137). For more information, call Alta Ski Resort at 801-742-3333.
