There are many reasons to love fall, like crisp afternoon runs and rides, primo sending temperatures, and the impending arrival of snow. But there’s one aspect that’s universally great, no matter how you get outside: sweater weather. You know, that time of year when temperatures fall just enough to give you an excuse to swaddle yourself in cable knits and turtlenecks without needing a jacket. Many outdoor brands come prepared for the change in season with an array of sweaters, from the cozy to the classy. Here are the new styles we’re obsessed with.

Women’s

Sherpa Yuden Pullover Sweater ($90)

Big cozy sweaters—the kind you can tuck your hands into or pull up over your chin—are a staple of my cold-weather wardrobe.  is no exception, with its mock turtleneck and roomy sleeves. Patagonia Women’s Andri Crew ($90)

Organic cotton and warm, wicking polyester give  the softness you want for everyday comfort and the moisture management you need when you’re running from errand to errand. It’s thin enough to wear on warmer fall days but will still keep you toasty when the mercury drops, and its slim, crewneck design goes with everything.

Stio Rune Crew Neck Sweater ($170)

A wide, ribbed crewneck, hem, and cuffs, and a not too fine, not too chunky moss-knit body make the  the perfect middle-ground sweater. It’s substantive enough to give you the snuggly feeling you crave but trim enough to look good dressed up. The odor-resistant merino wool is perfect for après too. —A.G.

Toad&Co Strahlhorn Quarter Zip ($139)

Quarter zips aren’t really my style, but I receive so many compliments when I wear the  that it’s become a wardrobe staple. The athletic cut is great for tall, skinny guys like me. It’s also made from a near 50-50 blend of merino wool and nylon, so it’s soft but holds its shape, even if I don’t wash it for a month. —Ben Fox, associate reviews editor

Finisterre Westray Crew ($155)

A thick wool sweater always brings back memories of cold, dark winters growing up in Maine. Made with a chunky cable knit and tweed yarn, the  looks as cozy as it feels. It’s not very fitted, so it layers well over a flannel. —B.F.

Icebreaker Tabi Cool-lite Cardigan ($130)

Made from the same silky soft merino wool as Icebreaker’s base layers, but designed by Japanese fashion brand Goldwin,  is easily the most stylish sweater I own. As soon as I get invited to a fancy dinner party, I’ll be ready. —B.F.
