Six winterized options for when the lifts stop spinning

Timberland Bardstown Plain Toe Oxford ($285)

Weather be damned, some situations call for a dress shoe. When the occasion obliges, we reach for the Bardstown, which has a just-right lugged-rubber outsole to prevent a neck-breaking fall on black ice. As far as we鈥檙e concerned, it鈥檚 the only oxford appropriate for winter.

Sanuk Puff N Chill ($80)

Based on a popular summertime staple鈥擲anuk鈥檚 Sidewalk Surfer鈥攖he Puff N Chill is beefed up for winter wear with a faux-shearling liner, a puffy-like upper, and mid-top height. The sawtooth outsole was stable enough, but we recommend taking these beyond the lodge bar only in tame weather and on brief errands.

Vans UltraRange Hi Dx听Zpr ($130)

Vans could easily rest on the laurels of its classic shoe designs, but over the past three years it has carved out a niche for itself in trail and travel footwear with the UltraRange line. Its latest, the Hi Dx听Zpr, pairs heritage good looks with a gusseted tongue, an aggressively lugged outsole, and a waterproof zipper for blocking slush.

Danner Raptor 650 ($240)

A company with no shortage of three-season clout, Danner pleasantly surprised us with the winterized Raptor, adapted from its airy Explorer 650 hiker. Insulated with 400-gram PrimaLoft and a fleece-lined upper, the boot is further sealed from the elements by waterproof leather.

Wolverine 1000 Mile Arctic ($425)

The Michigan-made 1000 Mile line has been a standard since the 1910s. This year鈥檚 Arctic boot trades the general-issue smooth sole for Vibram, then adds a waterproof Gore-Tex liner and treated leather (though you鈥檒l want to wear thick socks, as it鈥檚 light on insulation). An already legendary boot gets a winter makeover.

Toms Venice Collection Alpargata ($70)

A tonic for ski-boot-weary feet, the quilted, faux-shearling-lined upper of the Alpargata is just what we want after a long day on the mountain with cramped toes. Our go-to house slipper may never leave the chalet, but a patterned mid-and-outsole combo lends it just enough traction while weighing next to nothing.
