The Takeaway
The Good:聽Speed, grip, puncture-resistance, and durability: Vittoria鈥檚聽graphene-infused聽cross-country聽聽has it all. And we thought that was impossible.聽It鈥檚 lightweight and聽grippy聽(even on slimy Vermont roots and rocks), and聽after a month of daily use, it shows聽less wear than other XC聽tires I鈥檝e run聽for the same period of time.
鈥婽he Bad:聽Right now, my聽only gripe is that I聽want a more aggressive version of this tire鈥攎ore like Vittoria鈥檚聽Goma, but with the graphene鈥檚 reduced weight and added durability. The good news: That tire, called the聽Morsa, is coming soon, according to the company. Because the聽Mezcal聽has such a low profile, it gets bogged down in the mud.聽
鈥婽he Verdict:聽A perfect mountain bike tire should have low rolling resistance and be聽durable, lightweight,聽and聽grippy. Most tires do just one or two of those things well.聽If they鈥檙e聽grippy, they wear out fast. If they鈥檙e fast, they鈥檙e not aggressive enough.聽The聽Mezcal, on the other hand, gave us聽everything we could hope for in a聽tire:聽grip on wet surfaces, speed,聽and puncture聽resistance聽with no weight penalty.聽

Technology
Graphene,聽the thinnest, strongest material ever discovered, is聽a nearly transparent sheet of pure carbon that,聽in its extreme form,聽measures just聽a single atom thick. The graphene Vittoria uses,聽called pristine graphene (Vittoria brands it as G+), is two聽to eight atoms thick.聽
The stuff has several characteristics that, surprisingly, make it聽ideal for聽tires. A gram of graphene has an unbelievable surface area:聽around 2,630 square meters,聽or half the size of a football field. It鈥檚 about 200 times stronger than steel and has high thermal conductivity鈥攎ore than twice that of a diamond. It鈥檚 half the density of aluminum, which makes it聽light聽and highly elastic. 鈥淓ssentially, adding it to our tires has let us remove the material barriers of rubber,鈥 says Ken Avery, vice president of marketing and product for Vittoria. 聽

When graphene is added to rubber, as it is in the Mezcal, it changes the properties of the聽tire depending on the terrain, according to Avery. For example, when you鈥檙e rolling straight,聽the tire remains relatively hard. When you鈥檙e braking or cornering, it softens.聽鈥淥ur 2016 Mezcal rolls faster, grips better, and lasts longer than if we had simply used a softer performance compound,鈥 says Avery.
If that sounds downright mystical to you, you鈥檙e not alone. I was skeptical, too.聽But after a summer of testing the Mezcal in Vermont, I came away convinced that it鈥檚 one of the best XC tires on the market and that the added graphene is more than a gimmick.聽Vittoria doesn鈥檛 have stats for its MTB tires鈥攖he company claims聽trail surfaces are too variable to come up with meaningful metrics鈥攂ut it does聽have stats for the Mezcal鈥檚 graphene road聽counterpart,聽the聽Corsa Speed tubeless-ready G+. Vittoria says the Corsa Speed聽has 20聽to 40 percent聽less rolling resistance than the聽same product without G+. In the Vittoria lab, the road tire had a 32-second speed advantage over its聽nearest competitor after 50 kilometers.
None of which I鈥檓 able to prove without a third-party lab. But after hundreds of miles of testing, this is what I was聽able to verify.聽聽
Traction
Quite frankly, I was聽blown away by the tire鈥檚 grip. On a tour of backyard Vermont singletrack, I聽climbed like lightning,聽even when it was technical and wet,聽and cruised down descents where my聽riding partners slipped and skidded. I鈥檇 normally choose a tire with bigger knobs and a more aggressive profile to ride these trails, but I found I didn鈥檛 need that aggressive tread.聽On slick terrain, it performed as well as the Schwalbe Hans Dampf or Maxxis Highroller II.聽
Durability

After a summer of riding, the tires aren鈥檛 close to being worn out.聽Despite riding on rock, root, road, granite slab, dirt, and mud for 30 days straight, they鈥檙e still in excellent shape.聽It's impossible to say how long they'll last, but they're on track to last for the whole season, which for me means near daily riding from May through October.
Size/Fit
The tire is available for聽27.5- and 29-inch wheels聽in widths of 2.1 and 2.25.聽
The Competition聽
No one else is making tires with graphene鈥擵ittoria has an exclusive on this material for tires. And graphene聽tires are聽quickly making their way onto the podium. Cross-country racer Jason Sager says, 鈥淭he Mezcal is the fastest and most versatile tire I鈥檝e used. Typically, you need to choose a fast tire,聽like the , or a tire that handles well in dry conditions, like the . The Mezcal feels as fast in a straight line as the Renegade but still corners on everything, from marbles on hardpack to loam and even a little mud, better than something like the Ardent Race. Add in the long-wearing centerline tread聽and you have a tire that you鈥檒l get to enjoy for many, many miles.鈥澛
The Schwalbe聽Hans Dampf聽is the Mezcal's closest competitor: I like it for its'聽excellent grip, but it's major downside is its lack of durability. I found the聽Vittoria to be just as grippy, but more rugged, than the Schwalbe.聽
