Traffic, potholes, other cyclists. A lot of things make road riding seem scary. But while you can鈥檛 control the actions of others, you can do some things to cut your injury risk and actually have some fun doing it.聽

The University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 head cycling coach, , is an expert in turning squirrely kids into solid riders. Here are his top 10 tips for keeping newbie roadies chasing pavement instead of eating asphalt.

1. Know Your State鈥檚 Laws

鈥淭hey aren鈥檛 always straightforward,鈥 Winkler says, 鈥渁nd most people don鈥檛 know what they are, including drivers.鈥 There鈥檚 rarely a law that cyclists must ride in the bike lane if there is one, for instance. (鈥淢ost state laws say to ride as far to the right as is safe,鈥 Winkler says.) And not all states have the same laws about riding two abreast versus single file鈥攐r the same law about at stop signs. So check out The League of American Bicyclists鈥 聽to get a leg up before you roll out.聽

2. Take Video

In all aspects of modern life, 鈥減art of personal safety now is having the ability to video,鈥 Winkler says. (That shouldn鈥檛 make you paranoid; confrontations between cyclists and cars, pedestrians, or what have you don鈥檛 happen often, 鈥渢hey just get good media coverage,鈥 Winkler says.) Luckily for cyclists, recording a ride is as easy as strapping a GoPro or 聽to your helmet, handlebars, and/or seat post. Or you could opt for a two-in-one gizmo like Cycliq鈥檚 recording taillight, and recording front light.聽

3. Point Stuff Out

There鈥檚 not a universal way to point out road hazards like doors, people, animals, or cracks, or to let cyclists behind you know you鈥檙e slowing down or dropping back. 鈥淭he rules tend to develop in a group-specific way,鈥 Winkler says. So if you ride with a club, you鈥檒l learn how the other members like to signal each other. Whatever you do, make sure it鈥檚 a physical gesture鈥攐r physical and vocal鈥攔ather than just vocal. 鈥淚n my opinion, being super vocal is almost worse, because it doesn鈥檛 distinguish between the things that require extra concern, and those that are mundane,鈥 Winkler says. When in doubt, simply point at the hazard, or hold your hand to your side to show you鈥檙e slowing down; everyone should understand those moves.聽

4. Be Predictable

鈥淭he number-one rule of riding a bike is that you鈥檙e not doing something that other riders wouldn鈥檛 expect,鈥 Winkler says. Or drivers, for that matter. What does it mean to ride predictably? Ride in a straight line. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e going to deviate from a straight line, do it in a way that assumes people are around you,鈥 Winkler says. If you鈥檙e going to get squiggly, signal.

5. 聽Announce Yourself

鈥淚f I catch someone and they want to sit on my wheel for a free draft, I don鈥檛 care,鈥 Winkler says. Not all riders are that nice. Also, 鈥渋f the rider鈥檚 not aware someone [is drafting], they may not ride in a way that鈥檚 safe for the person behind them.鈥 In other words, they may ride unpredictably, and not point stuff out. A casual 鈥淢ind if I join you?鈥 should suffice. (Cycling vocab lesson: Drafting means riding in someone鈥檚 slipstream, where wind resistance is reduced so it鈥檚 easier for you to maintain the same pace as the guy in front of you.)

6. Look Ahead

鈥淚f you鈥檙e too fixated on what鈥檚 right in front of you, you tend to overreact鈥 to things, Winkler says. 鈥淲hereas if you were looking multiple lights in front of you, you鈥檇 see things developing, so your reaction would be more muted.鈥 For new riders cycling in a group, looking that far ahead can be a challenge when the greatest hazard seems to be the wheel in front of you. But it鈥檚 something to keep in mind so a panic brake doesn鈥檛 cause a crash behind you.

7. Don鈥檛 Gap

A gap is exactly what it sounds like: a gap in distance between riders big enough to lose the draft. If you鈥檙e in the middle of a line of cyclists, and you start to gap, it鈥檒l be harder for everyone else behind you to close the gap to stay with the people in front of you. So don鈥檛 be the guy who causes the gap. 鈥淵ou know when you鈥檙e in the red zone and it鈥檚 only a matter of time before you start to slow down,鈥 Winkler says. 鈥淚f you know that鈥檚 gonna happen, you can move out of line and gesture to the person behind you to come through and take your place before a gap develops.鈥 Then you join back in at the back of the line, and everybody鈥檚 happy.聽

8. Don鈥檛 Half Wheel

鈥淲hen you鈥檙e riding two abreast, the unwritten rule is the first two riders ride even鈥攅lbow to elbow or handlebar to handlebar,鈥 Winkler says. Some riders, often unintentionally, ride half of a wheel in front of the person next to them. So the other rider will accelerate to be even, then the half-wheeler will inch forward again. The result: an unintentional increase in pace that may or may not anger your fellow riders.

9. Assume the Worst

鈥淵ou have to imagine the worst thing someone will do so you can prepare for it,鈥 Winkler says. Like opening a car door into your path, or cutting you off to turn right. If there are parked cars on your right, and you鈥檙e already riding out of the door zone, a swinging door won鈥檛 catch you by surprise and knock you down. 聽

10. Ride in the Lane

鈥淵ou鈥檙e safer if you take up more of the lane鈥攚hether there are parked cars on the side or not鈥攂ecause then cars have to acknowledge your existence,鈥 Winkler says. 鈥淲hereas if you鈥檙e riding within six inches of the edge of the road, then a car can assume they have room to go by you. If they鈥檙e wrong, you lose.鈥
