I'm heading out on a mini hut trip this weekend, which means it's time to gather up all the necessary gear and check it twice. I treat packing for a hut trip like packing for car camping in a two-door Honda Civic. You want some comforts but not so many that they weigh you down. Here's the handy checklist I came up with that I thought might be useful for any first timers out there. This list assumes that your hut will have kitchen equipment and an outhouse.聽
鈥 Pack. You want one that's light but with a capacity of at least 50 liters.聽
鈥 Skis, Boots, Poles (duh)
鈥 Skins聽
鈥 Shovel聽
鈥 Beacon聽
鈥 Probe
鈥 Transceiver and extra batteries
鈥 Sleeping bag聽
鈥 Camp pillow聽
鈥 Sunglasses聽
鈥 Goggles聽
鈥 First aid kit
鈥 Repair kit, including duct tape and multi-tool聽
鈥 Water bottle and/or hydration bladder
鈥 Layers. My set-up usually looks something like this: socks, knicker long underwear and ProShell pants on the bottom, then a merino t-shirt, synthetic long sleever, ProShell jacket, and hat on top. I'll have an extra fleece pullover, light synthetic jacket and poofy down jacket in my pack. And yes, sometimes I wear everything. 聽
鈥 Change of dry clothes for the hut
鈥 Hut slippers. I like down booties.聽
鈥 Toothbrush and toothpaste
鈥 Lotion聽
鈥 Sunscreen (I like Kiehl's All-Sport Face Protector SPF 30, which also helps protect against wind burn.) 聽
鈥 Hand sanitizer or soap
鈥 Earplugs (counter-snoring strategy)
鈥 Lip balm with SPF
鈥 Secret women's supplies and extra hair ties聽
鈥 Headlamp with new batteries
鈥 A camp lantern or candles if the hut doesn't have them
鈥 Camera聽
鈥 Lighter, just in case聽
鈥 Toilet paper, just in case聽
鈥 Map and compass if it's going to be a tricky or unfamiliar route聽
鈥 Plastic bags for trash
鈥 A few ziplocks
鈥 Playing cards聽
鈥 Whiskey聽
鈥 Food and hot drinks
Anything I forgot?聽
